Emergency exit from storm shelter

why does it have to be a perfect seal ? if its an emergency exit. put a small doorway hole in the concrete wall, with a door that seals tight. center that opening in your dainpipe, seal the drain pipe to be as tight as resonable, but as long as water drains OUTSIDE the shelter it doesnt matter. dont make this any more complicated than it needs to be.

just thinking outside the box.

True, but in know I would be tempted to build storage along one side. Even if only one shelf...that's a lot of storage.

I too am thinking outside of "his" box...right into that 5' diameter tube :)

We attached all kinds of culvert pipe extensions to headwalls simply by drilling 6 or 8 holes in the headwall and epoxying in rebar stubs, stick in the pipe, then build a form around it and pour it full of concrete. Pipe is permanently attached and I'm sure that at your depth will never heave but the whole thing would move together even if it did. It's a water tight seal but you could coat it with foundation coating or similar if you like. As long as you have fall and underdrain, any water that did seep down would drain out anyway. On my storm shelter in Fla. we just put steps like outside cellar steps and a Bilco looking hatch door made of wood, with tools enough in the shelter to dig, pry, chop or saw our way out if necessary.

As we built the shelter in 1971 after a tornado came through and we sold the place in '95, I had forgotten about this until reading the above posts about building storage in the pipe, it reminded me that 2 or 3 years after building the shelter, we had a 4 ft dia pipe laying around that we buried butting against one wall, with the intention of breaking through the wall and using it for extra storage but never did break through. We also had a water storage tank buried next to the shelter that fed off the swimming pool which was resupplied with water piped from the eaves trough's on the house.

Along the line of "thinking outside the box"---->I wasn't going to tell anybody:D but I have an idea of incorporating a target range for, at most, 22LR
pistol . The tube is 50' in length. I am still working on designing the back stop for the proposed range and incorporating it into the terminating door.

I met a guy out in Utah once, that had a boxcar buried under ground for his shooting range! He said he could shoot whatever he wanted down there, and nobody could hear it above ground.

Shame that he passed away a couple years ago, he was a really interesting guy....
