Your dealing with people that have values that are not up to your standards. You will have to either confront them about their dogs, or leave it be.

Now the real question is in the future, this person that discharges a firearm and laughs about it, do you really want to escalate "tensions" with this mentality?

Yes, I have dogs, have my property fenced with field fencing and topped with two strands of barbed. The interior of the fence line is lined with one strand of electric. The road frontage also has a second line of electric on the road side. The gate also has two strands of electric.

Lots of dogs around here but one has never gotten out nor has one gotten in.

For folks like your neighbors, I would warn them once and remind them of how they dealt with your dog. Then get a dog trap and take them to the county pound, that is if you dont feel like digging a hole. My county here has dog traps we can "borrow" if needed, we also have a county wide leash law, which is nice but often ignored.

whistlepig, glad you were able to vent about your situation on here... seems shooting over the dogs heads was no real problem, more an annoyance. The neighbor dogs coming to visit sounds like a habit that needs changing. We have some neighbors that think the law only applies to others and they are free to do as they want, from letting their dogs run loose, to burning trash in a burn pile in their yard (county has leash laws for dogs, we are in a no burn zone). If someone else burns some leaves or yard waste, these neighbors get upset with the smell and smoke... if someone else's dog is roaming, they get all upset.

Super soaker squirt gun with ammonia in it will train those dogs to go home and not come back. It will should not harm the animal but cause enough discomfort for them not to come back. The other alternative is pepper spray.

The idea is to change the dogs' behavior - not create a big problem with the neighbor like killing their dogs or calling the pound.

Ted, I have done that for "car chaser" dogs and it works well for that too!
