Last weekend I bought a tractor and trailer combination at a yard sale. I don't need the trailer so I put it on Craigslist. It is an unusual trailer in that the guy converted it to a dump trailer. Since it is home made and still needs some work I think I am asking a fair price.

Opinions?

Looks very fair! You likely could ask 500 to 700 more and get takers.

Thank you. It seems on C-list everybody wants to beat you down on the price. I will hold firm on my price and see if I get any takers.

What axles? That would make it a fair price or way over priced.

Good thing with CL is there are plenty of suckers.....

Kind of an unusual trailer but I think you have it priced fairly. FWIW, I have posted a number of items on Craigslist lately because my wife and I are downsizing. Most of the replies are "what is the least you will take for it?"

I suppose these posters have an some sort of aggressive agenda to make a quick buck or whatever. I do not respond to them however. If I do not get any "good" responses, I may choose to list with a paying site or take the item to an auction where you can place a reserve price on an item.

Since it is homemade, do you have a title? Can it be titled in order to obtain a license plate for road or highway use? If so, I think your asking price is fair.

It looks like a reasonable price, if only you were a little closer.

I usually pay the asking price on 90% of the stuff I buy off of Craigslist. Sometimes I'll round UP to the nearest multiple of $20!!! Occasionally I'll offer less if it isn't worth the asking price to me. But, the seller can usually figure out if I really want it, and then it is hard to bargain.

Depending on what it ultimately is used for, the trailer will need some work. Perhaps different sides, a tailgate, FENDERS. Does it have lights? The ramps look nice. Perhaps take another photo to show the fenders & lights.

I assume if one is hauling something like bark, it still needs some shovelling, but it is easier to shovel downhill.

Also, I'd encourage measuring the bed and posting it in the ad. What's the thing in the middle of the bed? Attachment for the dump? How big?

Thank you all for your replies.
Answers to your questions are;
1.It can be titled as home made in florida, you just have to weight it.
2. I am not sure of the capacity of the axles, they are 5 lug and the front one has surge brakes on it. By being 5 lug I would say they are 3k lb. axles as the ones on my utility trailer are 5 lug 3k lb.
3. That thing you see in the middle of the bed is the bracket for the top of the hydraulic cylinder, It needs a box built over it.
4. Yes it has lights, one is broken, but the wiring looks good.
5. I am not looking for "sucker", just someone who wants a trailer and doesn't mind a little bit of work.

What I've learned from selling on CL is you are best to either price it a little low for a quick 'no questions asked' sale, or price it high with the intention of accepting a quick 'low-ball' offer. There are 2 main types of buyers who troll CL - those looking to beat others to buy a great low priced item, and those that need to feel good by beating you down on price. IMO you have this trailer priced close to fair, so you are stuck between those 2 types of buyers.

I'd say fair deal. If it had mh axles...not so fair.

If it were local and I was in the market, I'd offer you a grand.

I don't think its too bad but I'm guessing its more useful as a equipment trailer then as a dump. Used equipment trailers are around $1200, but I would take $1000 for it if I were you.

Well, YOU ASKED FOR OPINIONS.

Just looking at those pics and your description, which seem to fairly describe and depict the trailer, I would not think its worth that much. Plywood bottom? Used trailers almost always have had deferred maintainence.

To me just from the pics and description -$500 max.

And, I don't troll CL to beat people dwn on prices. Never bought anything off CL personally.

I'm in Canada, but even in our market, it looks like a fair / low price range to me.
If I saw it I would also probably offer $1000 (only because that's what it's worth to me ... which is a different matter than what it might actually be worth). It has extras (dump, gearing, and tool box, winch ?, battery, loading ramps etc), so I certainly think your price is reasonable. When you say 18 ft, that is the box / deck length correct ? it looks to be 6 ft wide. If I was buying, the axle details would be important.
As a seller, consider what is it worth to you - you bought it as an extra with the tractor, so there is some value there - don't give it away.
If it takes too long to sell, maybe consider the equipment auctions in your area - min bid $1000 ?
Another thought is to make it a charity donation and simply get a donation receipt for the value of the trailer (my wife volunteers at our very busy Thrift Store and I see what they use for equipment).
You seem like a reasonable person, and I think you should have no trouble selling it.
All the best.

Are those hydraulic surge brakes?
Any chance they work?

Also, a buyer might be interested in the tire type and condition, as it is easy to drop an additional $500 on new tires.

I suppose there are a lot of things I'd like to see on an ad, but rarely find all the answers I'm looking for.

I'd keep your price as it is for a week or two. See how many nibbles you get. Then you might consider dropping it. Rather than $1K, perhaps $950.

As Ford850 mentioned, there are some items that only last a few minutes on Craigslist. Yet, if the price was doubled, they might hang out for months.

I have to agree, it just looks a little sketchy looking at the photos. In person it might look a lot better?

Thank you all for your input. I just sold it to the first guy that came and looked at it. I let him have $50 off and he seemed happy with the deal. We ran the bed up and down and he said it would be just right. He just left.

Nice. Most don't have that kind of luck.

Congrats! Now take another 50 for taking the wife out to dinner to keep her happy and you are good to go!

Good on you! Are you sure you're not a retired car salesman?
