what if you spent years eating that way and died sooner than you thought anyway...that would be a real bummer

Yeah, I can remember when we had one of those regular joggers in Dallas; a 35 year old doctor who went for a run every morning. And one day when he didn't come back, his wife called and he was found dead of a heart attack. The wife said he'd never had any indication of a bad heart before.

I have a different opinion on the Meat and Fat...

I'm on the Atkin's diet, and that is what I eat A LOT of.

I started on April 20th and as of today, May 26th, I've lost 17 lbs, have perfect blood sugar and cholesteral #'s and my BP is down, close to normal. (Now if I could quit smoking, that would improve even more - but one "project at a time :laughing:

One of the nice things about Atkin's, besides losing weight fast, is you rarely get hungry. When you eliminate a lot of carbs, your blood sugar stabilizes and your :confused3:hunger goes away.

Yeah, you lose weight for a while but since it doesn't address the underlying issues of proper diet the weight comes back and 10 or 20 years later the menu of today, that is long forgotten will almost certainly have the boomerang effect of cardiovascular disease.
Now, I suppose you could do a part of that diet if you had a very hard job such as pounding in railroad spikes or busting rocks with a sledgehammer, but we don't do much of that type of labor any longer. It's the combo of high fat and couch potato that is the killer.

Sure, I would also prefer the steak and sausage thing but I would like, if at all possible to live as long as I can. There are tractor projects I need to complete, puppies I need to play with and garden tomatoes I need to eat.

Science has not cracked the nut regarding diet. I expect they will but I do not think I will live to see it. We know genetics are a major factor, why some people can eat whatever and remain thin. The problem is we have to live and eat in the world as it exists now.

I have to wonder if the problem is with the 'factory' food we eat. Where the people from a few generations ago healthier. Trouble is that I am too lazy to cook and as long as I can rip open a box and eat now instead of cooking from scratch.... And cooking for one sucks.

Even worse my wife has a double genetic whammy of very high cholesterol and diabetes. She was also a meat and spuds sort of person. Now she eats mostly tofu wacked up to look like meat. Expensive and mostly gross. It is rough if you can't have meat or carbs and hate veggies what do you eat.
