Things that annoy me

According to one of my professors: Our system is designed so that you have to touch two particular wires to get shocked by 240. Wall outlets won't do it. You have to mess with the drier, or well pump AND touch two wires simultaneously to get clobbered by 240V.

Except for static, I've never been shocked by more than 120V, and I'd hate to think what 240 would feel like.

Also the higher voltage requires smaller conductors and typical circuits are 12 and 16 amp.

Lightning protection is also standard as well as GFCI for decades in the panel...

None of us thought to ask how the Europeans mitigate that risk, but I'm sure they have made their home systems as safe or safer.

I've done some residential wiring on new construction in Austria...

It is different... in that 220v is the normal voltage and 380v for things like electric continuous flow water heaters.

The 220v outlets are much safer than ours in that there is no way a person plugging into the outlet can have contact with either prong of the plug because the receptacle area is recessed.

Applause for you action on this.

My peeve, is people who ask my advice, then ignore it and ultimately come to me to help fix the resulting mess. Over and over again.

There is a name for these people...Askholes.

Just look at the money taxpayers spend picking up the trash along the highways, and yet there's always more trash there right away. I don't understand it. Litter bags have long been available to carry in your vehicle, and of course now we just keep plastic sacks from the grocery store in each vehicle. I just cannot see any excuse for throwing litter out of a vehicle.

Not just trash on the highways.....in our neck of the woods......idiots go up the logging roads and dump TVs' old furniture and you name it. I've have followed pick-ups loaded with household garbage. These same people wonder why the timber companies are locking the gates. It's pathetic......they'll fine you if caught but rarely does that happen. These idiots are ruining it for the rest of us.

My last post was made in jest somewhat, but what really chaps my gluteus maximus is the family who decide to move to the acreage and enjoy a bit of country life, but soon discover that it's a lot of work. Soooo, they don't keep their yard/acreage mowed and maintained; the sandburs are so thick you wouldn't dare to walk barefoot across the yard; they allow junk and litter to accumulate, store derelict boats, cars and lawn tractors in the weeds, etc. not to mention never doing any painting or upkeep on their house or outbuildings. I know it's a free country, but I just wish they were someone else's neighbor's, not mine.

In my case most of them are relatives:)

Very true and the amount of trash can be staggering...

I helped out on one cleanup in Thurston County and everything from household trash, car batteries and lots of appliances and broken furniture...

People that have so little disregard really annoy me to no end...

Trash is at the top of my list because it is willful and deliberate.

A few weeks ago, someone came between 12 midnight and 4 am and filled the 4 yard paper recycle dumpster with chunks of concrete.... took me the better part of a day to deal with.

Had to go home, get my truck and trailer and then climb into the dumpster and breakup the pieces to a manageable size, lift and load into my trailer... took two dump runs and disposal was not cheap.

What chaps me even more is the "new" neighbor that bought the existing wooded property across the road...cut down ALL THE TREES then put a half dozen outdoor floodlights onto the house and lined the driveway with another 6 lightposts and then leaves them all on all night long!

Lit up like a freaking airport

Wanna trade neighbors? I'm bettin cant see the junk at night lol! :D

If the receptacle is installed in the wall correctly (ground pin down), the wide blade goes to the left. See, now you have one fewer stressors in your life. One of mine is people who don't know the difference between fewer and less, and no one seems to any longer.

Huh, an electrician told me the exact opposite. With the ground prong down, if the plug isn't quite pushed in all the way; something can fall across the two conductors and cause a short.

Unlikely I know... and I acknowledge that I know nothing about electrical code.

All mine are installed that way...ground pin on top for just that reason. (was new construction in 2006)
