Food Saver Vacuum Pack

/ Food Saver Vacuum Pack #111
I've been following this thread for, well years. Anyone use vacuum seal for freezing blueberries?

Thanks,

Jack

I have not. I would think you would have to freeze the berries first and then gently vacuum seal. I would think fresh berries would just turn to mush when vacuum was applied to the bag.

This summer I am going to try to freeze about five pounds of Blueberries to use in a batch of beer. I won't care if the berries going mushy but I will try to freeze them first.

Oddly enough, I don't think we've ever bought a blueberry, although I've eaten blueberry muffins and blueberry pie and really like those.

You are certainly right dmccarty. We have a single blueberry tree but it puts out about 30-40 quarts of blueberries every year. Tried and true system is to freeze the blueberries on a cookie sheet, then vacuum bag 'em. They'll keep forever and taste exactly like fresh off the tree when you thaw them and cook them.

Best treat for me is a blueberry cobbler. But I won't turn down BB muffins or BB pie :)

This thread, although innocently started with a simple question, has turned out a lot of excellent recipes! Makes me hungry!!!

Received my new "Gamesaver" in the mail Saturday, plus new seals for the old one. Man, when the corn is ready I now have a double barrelled attack.

When we bought the dehydrator last year I started drying blueberries. The problem with drying blueberries is that they are different sizes and thus dry at different rates. They also take a good bit of time. The best way to dry them was to blend them up and pour them on a tray to make fruit leather. I ate pints and pints of blueberries last summer. :licking::licking::licking: We had hopped to finally plant blueberries last fall but alas I was too busy. Maybe this fall. In the meantime, I will buy blueberries from the local markets and store when the price is right.

Our dehydrator has nine trays and I can dry 2-3 pints per tray. One couple at the farmers market had a 30-40 pints on blueberries for sale last summer. I figure if I offer to buy 25 or so pints I will get a bulk discount. :D:D:D

Gave mine (and me) a good workout today. Just happened to wander to end of the meat isle at one of our local supermarkets and discovered "Manager's Special" a collection of meat packages all marked down. Most expensive were the Ribeye and T bone steaks at $3.99lb. Local grown, grass fed, 90% ground beef, $2lb. Came home with $98 worth, about 30lbs. Portioned out to meal size for wife and I, seasoned some and vac sealed into 17 packages and into the freezer. Took me about an hour. So that's 17 first time meals plus lots of leftovers. That's less than $6 per package/meal, more than half steak.

Yep, dmccarty is right. I've been freezing a pint of blueberries from our bushes each day for over a week. We are not yet at the peak of the season. I give them several hours to overnight in the freezer before I use the Foodsaver. I'm also bringing in corn daily - - guess I'll cut some off for freezing too.

A great time of year, although the heat is finally here after a pretty cool spring.
