Called the dealer yesterday and ordered the part. It's officially called handle. They have only sold 3 since 2011, so locally there aren't many people losing these. However their supply warehouse had 15,000 available, so they're going somewhere. Price is $16. Before I try to jury rig something up, I'm going to be extra careful to make sure it's in the lock position and chalk this up to user error. If it happens again, I'll revisit solutions.

I looked at the handle on my 6415 and it has a rubber ring at the top. Not sure if it's to keep dirt out or keep it from moving up.

The rubber ring is painted green

That's good information, thanks. Mine did not have that rubber ring, and the JD parts diagram didn't show it either.

I wonder if it's something they eliminated for cost cutting reasons??

A little off subject, but does anyone have the cross drilled cat. 1/2 lower link balls on their hitch? Are you happy with the way they work?
I connect to both cat 1 and 2 implements, and using the bushings is a PITA sometimes. I looked at replacing the E arms with M arms that had the cross drilled balls and extendable links. They run almost $800.00 for the pair.
