about a month ago I ordered a new one of these

it just came in yesterday, when I got to the dealer to pick it up the mechanic was putting it together on the concrete shop floor. as a mechanic myself, I found this odd, I generally take more care with my own equipment. I put together a tiller they sold my dad with a piece of cardboard on my own shop floor. I got the spreader home and upon hooking it up I found the tube frame badly scratched, some of it badly spraypainted over with runs and bare metal showing. I find it hard to believe it came from the factory like that. nearly $1500 spreader which will rust in no time. I was running behind since the thing took a month to arrive and had to spread lime and fertilizer the minute I got it home.

I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow. the spreader will be going back one way or another. I noticed they were putting together another one on the shop floor beside it and I don't want that one as a replacement either. I had planned on spending about $85,000 on green tractors in the next few years and this wasn't a great first impression. if this is the type of people who work at Deere dealers then I don't want them anywhere near my tractors.

Sorry about the damaged implement. As an aside be prepared for some heat. Some think paying $50,000 for a tractor and it being delivered damaged is acceptable. They will probably find it hilarious you only paid $1,500 and expected a new un-damaged unit.

I am fortunate that my dealer understands that I keep my equipment in excellent condition and I expect new equipment to be delivered to me from the factory in new condition. It took a few purchases for us to get there. He understood when he visited my barn and saw the condition everything is in. I got into the habit of keeping equipment as 'new looking' as possible along with before use preventive maintenance many years ago in the US Army.

Each person has their own standard on how they buy and keep their equipment. I keep my equipment looking and operating like new.

Hi

As you have already used it and didn't complain when you saw it on the shop floor you are probably -2 at this stage.

With a spreader paint is a major component in there life span. I generally think that with a loader or ground engaging impliment its no big deal, But a spreader is going to get rusted through very fast with out a good protective paint.

I totally agree. It should've been mentioned before leaving the dealership with it and most definitely before use.

We can talk about play on words but it was new! Kind of like the tractor was built in Georgia!

I'm sorry that this amuses me. But, oh no, not the concrete floor. Let me start by saying I spent 12 yrs of my career as a equipment dealer mechanic. I have a few points to make. The dealer likely made less than $150 on that spreader, to think that he wants his mechanics spending half a day assembling and repainting that spreader is silly. I've put together a few broadcast spreaders like that. They come in a large cardboard box and there are typically spots where during shipping the implement got its paint rubbed off. If it was bad enough, we would try to touch it up, but don't expect a body shop type paint job. This practice along with assembling on the heinous concrete floor is common practice, to use this as barometer of your dealers quality is another absurdity. If it really bothers you let the dealer know, we knew which customers needed extra attention to things that 99% of our customers didn't. If this is the kind of attention you will demand of your dealer, expect future pricing to reflect that. The other option is to take delivery of implements unassembled and do it yourself, then you can be as meticulous as you want, and be sure to order the matching paint at the same time.

The paint all scratched up is subjective. Do you have any pictures so we know just how bad it was/is??

I would probably be a tad upset too, but thats why I dont buy new stuff. I buy well used.

Now if it were a tiller, or rear blade, I would overlook issues in the "working area". And certainly wont give any sympathy to someone who complains about stuff like paint wore off a loader bucket on a new tractor.

But the frame of the spreader...again....pictures will tell us the whole story. So I wont speculate on that.

If I pay the "new" price tag, then I want "new" condition also. Would you buy a scratched up new car with ripped seats? Some worker put that together. I probably wouldn't have taken it home though in the first place. And I don't care that it's equipment that will be used; frankly, I want to scratch my own stuff up so I can only blame myself for future problems.
