Kubota BX23
I just purchased a 2005 Kubota BX23 with 250 hours. Needing a machine to relieve my back. I read the do's and don't's on different forums to educate myself as much as possible.
Anyway, the seller assured me the tractor was in great condition and I did run it before purchase. I got it home and found; the fuel gauge doesn't work, the brackets holding the air cleaner had been rigged. After 3 hours of used it came loose. I just wonder if there is anything else he didn't tell me. He said it was full serviced @220 hours and it now has 251. I notice when I turn the key to "on" I hear this fast clicking sound. Is this the fuel pump? Other than what I described, the tractor has run flawlessly for my first 3 hours of run. My back appreciates this machine too. I noticed in my area (NC) this model isn't that common. Was this a good year and model for Kubota? Thanks for any sharing of advice and experiences "23" owners may have. :D

Re: Kubota BX23

The clicking is normal. It's coming from the fuel lift pump underneath.

That's pretty few hours, should be a good tractor for you for years to come.

You're welcome. I don't have a BX23, but I've heard there were a number of folks that had issues with the air filter bracket. Here are a couple of past threads on the subject, and includes some fixes people have made:

The only "Problems" I have had with my BX23 are fuel gauge and air cleaner bracket.

Neither has prevented anything I wanted to do.

Fuel gauge really isn't an issue for me because I always top off the tank at the end of the day.

There has been lots of discussion of air cleaner brackets and a few Kubota redesigns if memory serves.

I think the consensus is vibration at idle is the leading culprit... so I seldom let the motor run at idle... always a little above to the speed where vibration is minimized.

PS... A few more things regarding quirks of the BX23 model.

The toggle switches do not like to be wet... in other words don't drowned them in water and you should be fine... otherwise, the water can complete the circuit and strange things happen like the flashers going off until the battery dies.

Another, not necessarily a quirk, is lack of power because the 3 point level has inadvertently been moved from the center position...

Also, driving with the brake pedal on is something to be aware of... the engine can easily overpower the parking brake.

Plus... if the engine fails to crank it most likely is as simple as a safety interlock switch in the wrong position... on mine, I sometimes have to slightly rock the hydro pedal or verify the high/low speed selector in neutral...

Once, in the mud there was so much of it that it prevented the high/low speed range selector from being in the neutral position.

This said... my BX continues to amaze me and has moved hundreds of yards of material, dug ditches, and tamed the wild forest around my place... it is the Swiss Army knife of tractors.

The reason I bought one was to save my back and get more done too.

Also, the BX23 is very thrifty of fuel... amazes me how much it can do with a couple of gallons of fuel.

I'm sure you will enjoy your BX... Be careful and have fun!

Two things I have added:

Skid Plate from Brotek because the plastic Hydro fan is vulnerable... especially if going into the woods.

Tooth Bar for my loader which greatly improved loader versatility.

ultrarunner pretty much summed it up...

One thing I would add is to be very careful about shifting into neutral on a slope, such as when starting the engine. This might be true for many tractors but the BX is susceptible to rolling away very quickly if you shift into neutral without the parking brake on. Be careful.

I found the rolling issue very quickly. Shifted to N in a slight decline and off she went lol. Great advice. Even though I read the instructions 4 times, I still can't release the backhoe form tractor. Any advice?
