So, got back to the lake and drained the rear and pulled the PTO shaft again, yesterday. put new CNH seal in the carrier, Permatex #2 between carrier and gasket and on the housing. Got it all back together and no seal leak! Mowed for 1.5 hours and everything is good. Parked it overnight and came out to oil in the drip pan I put under the PTO area to see if it still leaked. Drawbar and hitch have UTF on them, but seal area and bearing carrier are dry. Thinking, what the heck?

Started looking more and it looks like one of the bolts that holds the drawbar hitch on the rear housing has a leaking bolt. Looked in the I&T and Ford Service manual and neither say anything about putting something on the bolts. Thoughts? The bolt in the picture appears to be the culprit. I didn't know if those bolts holes were open to the rear or not, so I stuck it back in to hold the fluid in until I drain the rear (again!).

Permatex #2 on the bolt threads?

Sounds like someone ran a bolt that was to long and broke out the casting causing oil to leak past the threads. If I'm not mistaken the bolt holes are cast into the housing, my brother did the same thing on his 600

So do you think Permatex #2 would help at all? Or is there no cure? Have not worked much with the various sealers/sealants so don't know which would be best. #2 is non-hardening, so you think that would the ticket...

I like using the ultra gray, you can pick it up at any parts house.

as long as there is no crack across the housing, then I would for sure try some sealer on that leaking bolt. something heavy with good body. even the permatex you already have.

Got it apart and cleaned up last night. One bolt was too long and "punched" through. The other bolt holes had a tiny hole punched in the end. So they are all leakers...

Cleaned everything up good with brake cleaner and chased the bolts holes with cleaner and a rag.

Now just "stuck" on which Permatex product to use. I have #2 on hand, but only want to do this job once. Have to run to town anyway so what Permatex product should I use on those threads?

Soundguy...no cracks in housing, just "through holes" in all the bolt holes.

#2 should be fine if you have enough.

Hi! Here is a pic of the CNH seal I bought today. Way better looking than the Tisco one I put in backwards. I will have to grab a pic when I pull the other one out and post it. For the extra couple of bucks I think the CNH seal is worth it.

FYI...Here is the cheapy Tisco seal that I put in backwards. I replaced this with a CNH seal. The side with the screwdriver marks on it was the spring side and the side I had facing out.

weird one. leave it to tisco to find a weird way to do it. :)

I probably would have worked when installed correctly.. however i prefer the cnh seals.. etc.

Justq wanted to follow up on the leaking bolts for the hitch. Got some Permatex #14 Thread Sealant when I went to town and so far (4 days) zero leaking. I could have used #2, but thought the #14 would be less messy and easier. Not really.

Anyway, just want to post this reply for future searches.
