So, got back to the lake and drained the rear and pulled the PTO shaft again, yesterday. put new CNH seal in the carrier, Permatex #2 between carrier and gasket and on the housing. Got it all back together and no seal leak! Mowed for 1.5 hours and everything is good. Parked it overnight and came out to oil in the drip pan I put under the PTO area to see if it still leaked. Drawbar and hitch have UTF on them, but seal area and bearing carrier are dry. Thinking, what the heck?
Started looking more and it looks like one of the bolts that holds the drawbar hitch on the rear housing has a leaking bolt. Looked in the I&T and Ford Service manual and neither say anything about putting something on the bolts. Thoughts? The bolt in the picture appears to be the culprit. I didn't know if those bolts holes were open to the rear or not, so I stuck it back in to hold the fluid in until I drain the rear (again!).
Permatex #2 on the bolt threads?
