Running out of Orange Juice!

My wife commented that her brand of apple juice was now smaller, tho the price was unchanged. I read the label. It stated that the company "is improving packaging to reduce our impact on the environment." The "new bottle is made using almost almost 14% less plastic." There is an upside to everything.

I have noticed some time ago one of our local grocery chains has the "$$/oz" clearly marked below the price on the shelves. Do others not do this?

Our store does but we were just in FLA and we went to Publix to buy food. I noticed some things did not have price stickers at all much less the $/oz. I was really surprised at this because Publix is a really good store chain. Having said that, I think many people don't even look at the prices much less the $/oz. I am pretty bad in that I will sit there and look at all prices and sizes before making a decision.

How much is the price of food influenced by corn being used to make ethanol? I have lived in the dairy & pork belt most of my life and they are all closing down because they can't afford to feed $6 corn to a ten cent hog. I have seen articles about corn being grown in areas that always used to be peanuts, cotton, fruit, etc. I don't blame the farmer for trying to make a living because the middleman is the only one making money.

I think it's probably obvious to all that grocery prices are going up, but how many actually keep track of it? I just had a look at some of my records and used 2010 as the base. Our grocery costs went up 4.47% in 2011, 12.5% over 2010 in 2012, and 18.73% over 2010 in 2013. Sure wish my income had gone up by that percentage.

The big food expense is processed foods. Instead of popcorn, people buy bags of microwave popcorn. Years ago I bought a Presto Power Pop and make microwave popcorn for 3 cents instead of $1 a bag. This time of year they are closing out the frozen storage for the new crop. I bought half a freezer full of frozen broccoli, corn, peas and mixed vegetables for 69 cents a pound. There's no waste, and it's actually healthier for you than the air freight and cold storage stuff you find in the produce aisle. People buy packaged cereal instead of cooking oatmeal or cream of wheat. I could go on and on. I can feed 8 people on a pound of boneless chicken, 2 bags of mixed vegetables and 3 cups of uncooked rice. That's about 50 cents a meal and nobody goes away hungry.

Yes, livestock producers have had a hard time. We had a nationwide drought last year, plus we lost millions of acres of pasture to wildfires. A lot of herds got reduced, or liquidated completely. I still have about 75 lbs of vacuum sealed steak in the freezer from last fall, when you could buy ribeye for $1.69/lb. High feed prices drove a neighbor's dairy into bankruptcy. The new crop won't be in the bin for 2 or 3 months yet, but don't expect prices to drop below $4. The Chinese would buy everything the US could grow if the price was right. They're in the process of buying Smithfield right now.

Buy USA (Florida) instead of Minute Made from Brazil.

We lived in Bradenton, Florida - Manatee County - for many years. Tropicana is located in Bradenton and is one of the largest employers. I came back to NC about four years ago to be with my Family. I was still working in Florida all those years. It was common knowledge that Tropicana was importing cargo tankers of Concentrate from Brazil. The Company was mixing the concentrate with juice from Florida oranges. To my knowledge, there is only one product of Tropicana Orange Juice that is solely made from PURE Florida Oranges. Orange Groves are vanishing from Florida at a rapid rate. This has been happening for decades, because the LAND is worth more for development. I have seen it with my own eyes, and I still have many friends that work at Tropicana.
