Actually a used air filter can be more efficient than removing dust than a brand new one. There is no shame in properly cleaning a dry element air filter with compressed air; particularly in instances where a secondary filter is present.

Yes, but not after nearly 500 hours and many cleanings. That's why the manufacturer says to limit cleanings to just a few and to replace frequently --I think yearly. A diesel engine gulps and is dependent on a huge volume of air to operate efficiently and that air had better be clean. Just my two cents here because LD1 is a smart guy.

Dry element air filter life is directly related to the conditions the filter works in. Hours of operation and units of time are guidelines established by the manufacturer because individual conditions can't be predicted. 500 engine hours can be 3 filter lifetimes or 1/3 of one. Cleaning or replacing air filter elements more often than necessary is wasteful and expensive.

40 years experience servicing air filters without dusting an engine because of a failed air filter.

I'll chime back in...

I dont operate in dusty conditions often at all. The tractors most use is just firewood, and bushhogging.

Not sure what the manual says, but I was planning a replacement at 500hrs. Which still isnt really alot at all. Thats only 5 oil changes....or about 20k miles if comparing to a car, How many people dont even chage a filter in their car before 100k miles

AS to the filter, for the size of the engine, the filter is huge. It is about the same displacement as my car, and only spins half of the RPM's, yet the filter is about 2x's the size.
