Problem with that is, wont they just go bankrupt?

Its going to end up costing hundreds of millions (likely) when this is all said and done. The company shouldnt be able to go bankrupt and leave a bunch of destroyed lives and a destroyed town in their wake.

Another interesting thing is, what about the I rving connection? Ive worked in the past for those cheap sobs (another story for another day).. and know that they don't do much out of house. They own everything from oil tankers to sign painters so that they can keep all the money internal. One article suggested an Irvi ng connection buried in the cooperate structure of MMA, via another rail line in NB I rving owns.. That doesnt surprise me, it would surprise me if it was otherwise..

Id like nothing more that to see Ir ving take a hit on this horrible situation. They are no angels. Hated as much as they're liked here. I really wish it didn't work that way, but with the right lawyers you can get away with just about anything.

Even a self-proclaimed "Green" province like BC won't walk the walk when it matters..... AFAIK that monster BC ferry is still sitting on the bottom of the Sound (the one that hit the HUGE island), and none of the fuel/oil has been recovered either. Green, yeah, right.

Agreed, it would be fitting for Irving to take a hit on this..... 'ol KC would be spinning in his grave !

I read this in the (print) paper yesterday.

I really wish my rantings about defanged govt oversight simply just moved me up the ranks of the Tinfoil Hat crowd, but this clearly illustrates how toothless the TSB is. "....questioned..." in the title says it all.

They "issued a report" about a similar 2011 runaway train/brake failure accident. Likely it never even got read at MMA.

I was thinking this morning "The fines alone should be X million dollars...." . The problem with that approach is that it could cripple a start-up company that truly does encounter a one-in-100-million accident.

Then it came to me - make the fine 1% of Gross Annual Sales. The penalty scales and it's significant for all companies. Make it Gross Sales, to get away from the alchemy the CFO pulls off when a corporation pays no taxes for decades.....

For 1 Billion in domestic Sales, you risk $10 million dollars in fines. THAT might be enough to keep Safety on the CxO's top 5 list.
