The gray area on whether a CDL is needed is if your state goes by the federal regs or not.

Commercial motor vehicle groups. - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

the fed regs clearly state a 10,001# trailer needs a CDL class A

On your link, click "Interpretation", in the "related links" box.

It says:

Question 2:
Is a driver of a combination vehicle with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of less than 26,001 pounds required to obtain a CDL even if the trailer Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is more than 10,000 pounds?

Guidance:
No, because the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) is less than 26,001 pounds.

Doesn't get much more clearly than that .
:D

Duffster beat me to it!

If it were me, I would start with one of these, View attachment 327641 rated at least 16K.
With your 1 ton you might not need a WD hitch.

I'm a big fan of WD systems, and the heavier the load, the more I like them. But they're not cheap, and if the hitch said it was rated to tow full load without a WD system, I might be tempted.

There are numerous threads regarding CDL and whether it's required or not. This thread should have nothing to do with CDL's. I've read plenty of the entertaining threads from so many people who can't seem to figure out how to read regulations.

No need to discuss it here in this thread.

This thread should have nothing to do with CDL's.

Enlighten us.

How does it have nothing to do with CDLs?

You use a trailer for an example that is pushing CDL territory and then comment how little payload it has.

I am not sure it is right, but the hitch in the link you provided shows it to be the same, that is what gave me the idea to try it without a WD hitch.:

Specially designed for heavy-duty towing, this fully welded trailer hitch receiver bolts onto your Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty's frame with no welding required. Powder coated steel is sturdy and corrosion resistant.
.........................

I haven't checked any other brands to see if they rate theirs the same.

My questions are all about what trailer setup would work best for me. Not about whether or not I'm in CDL territory, again, it had nothing to do with CDL's. I've seen so many decent trailer threads on here get ruined by guys arguing about whether or not a CDL is needed.

There is a lot of great advice in this thread by all of you guys, and I'd hate to see it turn into one of the MANY threads that end up as nothing more than a CDL argument. It just gets old that's all. I'm not trying to offend you, but I don't see how you think it DOES have something to do with CDL's.

I'll just add my two cents. Years ago when my wife still worked for the Ag Ex Agency, her boss was in the National Guard. He also owned a small styrofoam factory here in Blountstown Fl. He was sent to Bosnia, and the man he had running the factory wasn't getting the work done. He ask me if I would help make the foam, cut it to fill the orders and drive the truck. For a couple of years I made two and three trips a week with a one ton truck and dual wheel double axle trailer filled with stryofoam.

The man running the factory for the owner told me that I didn't need a CDL because the weight was so light. I took his word and had been driving for two years. All over the Florida panhandle and up into Ga and Al. One day I got stopped for an expired tag, and the state trouper told me that in this case the weight didn't matter. The fact I was a paid truck driver was enough for me to need the CDL. I knew him and he let me off with a warning.

At this point the business was barely afloat anyway. [pun intended] There wasn't many orders to cut or to haul, so I just quite them.

But according to my experience, weight is not always the determining factor.

Totally different when For Hire VS Personal.
