Re: Piranha tooth bar using with forks?

Dragoneggs;
Thanks for the fast reply. That is exactly what I was wondering about. I think as you suggested; I will give Harry a call at Bxpanded and ask him if I can slide the forks back and forth over those teeth or not. The forks do articulate from the top edge of the bucket.. but I am thinking that if I am lifting a heavy load with those forks it may put too much down pressure on the individual teeth?? I will call Harry on Monday and see what he thinks and will post it here. He may be following this thread himself actually and we may see his comment here also. Thanks again for the quick reply.

I also purchased the PTB.
I have found(like others on here), that it works great for cutting off brush just below ground level. I've been able to cut some bushes in half(leaving half to continue growing), by using the toothbar to cut through the roots.

Mine came sharp enough to cut through the shipping box, and I received several small cuts on my hands just carrying it to the tractor and installing it.(wear gloves when working with the toothbar)

It works great for spreading gravel from a pile. And after spreading soil, if you backdrag on an angle, it makes nice grooves in the soil to minimize water runoff and hold seed in place(much like the ratchet rake)

It doesn't dig in my hard ground as good as I was hoping for, but it works much better than the flat bucket edge.

I won't include video(not that I have any), but the request was made for BX video only. :)

When Harry first came out with the Piranha and announced it on TBN there was some discussion about using his forks with it installed. The two "missing teeth" areas are indeed intended as spots for his forks. Harry has clarified that you can order the notches in different locations, or not have any notches at all.

I've been on the fence about getting the Piranha, only because I have the forks (and use them quite often.) There are a few problems I see with leaving the tooth bar installed while using his forks, so I have to decide if I want a tooth bar that I have to pull off all the time...

1) As you mentioned, the forks attach at the top and they hang past the bucket lip. If you have the forks, you know that means that you have to have the bucket dumped a fair amount for the forks to be level. That means you can't really dump the forks all the way.

It's not a big problem. If I'm using the forks to move pallets, you don't need that range of dumping action. If I'm hauling brush and want to dump, I occasionally don't get the load to slide nicely off the forks at their max angle, and have to shake the loader some to get the load to slide off.

Having the fork bottoms held out even more because of the PTB will mean even less dump angle for the forks.

2) I also use the forks in different positions. At least for the pallets I deal with, it seems they are all different sizes, and often a bit narrower than the bucket. Having the fork position relegated to the two outer edges would not work for me. Perhaps having the notches located in a bit on each end would mostly solve that problem.

3) I have four of his forks. When using them spaced across the bucket they are great for brush/trash moving. I struggled with wondering if I really needed four, but can say I'm sure glad I did. It is really nice having four. I suppose I could ask for all the small teeth to be left out and have a bunch of fork locations...but I like the design the way it is. I'm not sure having the all the small teeth missing would affect the digging action too much, but I think it would affect the brush clearing efficiency.

So, if I decide to order one, I think for me I'd want all the teeth (no notches) and have to accept that I'd be pulling the PTB off for fork usage.

Re: Piranha tooth bar using with forks?

Hi Mr. Golf Addict,

If you do decide to order the PTB, just let Harry know what configuration you want and he'll gladly adapt it for you, at least when I ordered mine, he offered to do so for me, but I declined, as it didn't seem it would be a big deal.

For your BXpanded forks, it may help to have 2 sets of small teeth deleted to allow for adjustment to your fork positions from wide to narrow.

With my Yankee Warehouse forks, there is no problem with putting it over the smaller teeth (after the initial adaptation by grinding a slot into the square bracket/holder for the 2x4's that are intended to prevent roll back accidents from over-curling the bucket while lifted. The slot accommodates the beveled edge of the adjacent large tooth.

If I couldn't move my forks as needed, I would certainly consider having a total of 2 pairs of the smaller teeth removed to allow more flexibility, as I doubt you would lose much of the utility of the PTB that way.

I do think that asking Harry's opinion would also be a good way to confirm what effect that would have on the PTB's usefulness.

Re: Piranha tooth bar using with forks?

I broke down and ordered one, I ordered a rachet rake from Ct farm and family in early june, but they can't get them due to demand and supply. I have been in the market for something over 2 years now and read up on all, push has come to shove. So I guess I'll have to find out for myself if this is gonna cut it (pun intended) Rocks, roots, saplings, and everything in between on a home site clearing project in the Pennsylvania Appalachia mountains .

Was the price always the same or did these cost more when first introduced? I thought they where more than 229 last year?

I can't speak for price and I can't speak to your soil but I just finished cutting into my rocky hill more than four feet with the PTB and I know I could have never, and I mean never done it with my FEL without teeth. The bucket was absolutely useless for digging before PTB. Maybe hard to get some perspective in this photo but I cut into the into the 20degree slope, the area behind/above my new retaining wall. If you look close, you can see some 2ft by 8ft plywood forms I was using to hold back gravel/fill on retaining wall. Point is you can see the relative size of the cut. I used the spoils for backfilling behind the wall.

Dude, the perspective is clear, nice digging! Nice wall too! You do nice clean work with that little monster.

Keep up the good work!

Re: Piranha tooth bar using with forks?

Thanks for the input. I have the same rocky issue, mine are a bit larger with a greater likelihood of large flat ones. Problem with the straight edge is the bucket will hit a rock about 3-4" in diameter in hard soil, then the bucket will want to walk up towards the surface, lifting the front wheels off the deck. It typically takes a few shots, articulating the bucket to get any bite to dislodge the rock, then naturally, there is another one 3 inches behind that...LOL.
It can get rather interesting on a grade with trees nearby, particularly on uneven ground.
Rock piles with various size rocksare also interesting, as they used an excavator hammer to remove a ledge where I am working, then they piled it. during the pile making, all the large flat rocks slid down the pile with each heaping, so they all typically lay against the bottom third of the pile, in layers, so you could imagine how it must be trying to get any bite with the BX. The pile is over 200 ton, and no I am not moving the whole thing, just need to build access areas in the excavated area and working the new driveway fill.

Nice job on the wall, good tie in's and overlap, looks like someone won't have a hillside to weed wack any longer....
