Ford says no to Diesel F-150

Weight generally doesn't effect highway mpg nearly as much as it does city mpg.

True, it's mostly aerodynamics at highway speeds, but weight does play a part of it. Hills? Getting to highway speed? Passing?

I agree. Still don't see them getting near 30 with a gas engine in the near future in a full size truck. They aren't even tops right now, far from it actually. I just can't see them getting 5 mpg better than what the V6 Ram is rated at.

At least not without dropping a 4BT Cummins in it! Haha

It's going to be tough, I will say that. They may not hit 30, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see 28 or 29.

I would. I say 26. 27 max.

Small displacement, forced induction engines haven't yet proved capable of getting stellar mpg.

Well, it's possible the engines and trannies may not be available until 2016 MY, so, if that is the case, I could see 26-27 for 2015 MY and 28+ for the 2016 MY. With new engines and trannies, it will be up to at least 28.

I wonder what the real world MPG's will be for the Ram 1500 diesel? It could be near 30mpg in a regular cab 2WD. If that is so, why can't Ford get 30mpg also?

So you are saying that you believe that they will leapfrog GM and Ram by 4 and 3 mpg?

I know that Ford has some 'better ideas', but nothing that good.

Yes, yes I do. Ram leapfrogged Ford by 2, why can't Ford leapfrog them by 3?

Seriously, the Ram has a lot of small features that are not engine related to improve FE (8-speed tranny, grille shutters, etc.). Expect to see much of that on the next gen F150 to essentially make up the difference. Then, see new features on the F150 to increase the numbers even more. Don't forget a weight loss of 700 lbs.

Regarding the weight, by dropping weight, than can decrease the size of components, thus reducing weight more. Smaller components equate to less efficiency losses, less frictional losses, etc. It's like a snowball...

There's also direct injection as well, that's probably good for a good .5-1 MPG by itself.
