Nothings changed in 40 years. Unless you run big miles, all factors considered diesels don't pay out. In the the early 60's a big Ford V-8 (534 cu in) or International V-8 (549 cu in) was an equal match for say a Cummins NH 220 in terms of power. The gas jobs were pigs when it came to fuel but unless you ran the mileage, it was a tough sell to justify the diesel premium. Longevity? Again with a 100,000 mile engine warranty on say the Ford Super Duty (not to be confused with todays Super Duty) the motor was big bang for the buck. The Cummins wouldstill be going strong long after the gassers had been rebuilt but if say you were running dump trucks at 20 or 30,000 miles a year, gas was a good bet.
As so many have pointed out, the math hasn't changed.
