Us Canadians are a little backwards (;))...... but I actually do have a few reasons.... (edit - busy night, I was responding the Soundguy's post about Pay at the Pump).

1) Many pumps cap at $100. At Canadian prices, you don't need much of a tank to hit that on a fill. Making a long drive, at night, in a Canadian winter, you don't want to spend anymore time standing at a pump than you have to. Not a big deal if you don't care about filling up totally, I normally do.

2) When I delved into it just a couple of years back, stations will typically "pre-clear" your card for say $150-$200, before turning on the pump. Once you finish pumping say $65, then they will process that transaction for $65 separately. Then, they take days to a week to reconcile/credit the original $200 transaction. I stumbled on this by coincidence, when I was confirming a particular sequence of transactions with my CC company - went something like "What do you mean $150 at Esso, I don't (at the time) own anything that takes that much fuel".

Many people find out this when they go around buying $10 worth of fuel at a time, on a low limit card.

I generally refuse to pay at the pump as a matter of principal - irritates me that the CC companies/gas stations can play these games with my credit w/o informing the customer.

3) The one time in about the last 5 years that I did swipe at the pump.... it could have ended really badly.

I had two major customer demos set up for the same day, tight schedule. I had just enough time to fill up before the first meeting, with about 2 hours driving to do right afterwards to get to the second demo. OK, make an exception to your rule today Dave -> Swipe card at pump, pump turns on, fill up, return nozzle to pump. No receipt prints, no message on display. I almost skipped getting my copy of the receipt reprinted inside.... good thing I didn't - glitch on the first transaction, the pump turned on, but the card did not actually go through.

I thought I'd paid (no indication on the pump display otherwise) and almost unintentionally drove off w/o paying for my gas. I could have eventually explained what happened, but that is not a hassle I'd want to get into, esp. on an HD day like that particular one.

4) When I travel in Canada, and do find a particular area where Pre-pay is the norm (as in not province wide), that tells me a little about how bad the area is.

If my local Husky truck stop does change, I'll miss the convenience (my definition :)) I enjoy now.

I love the Husky!!

I paid $16.95 for oil plus filter at the local auto parts store. JiffyLube will do it for $20. Really hard for me to justify doing it myself, !

remember.. that guy working at 'quick-oil-change-place' couldn't get a job at walmart or mcdonalds. so now he's responsible for putting oil in your car after he drains it.. and you hope he does. and does't strip anything.

yuo also have less control of actual oil being used and filter products.

does he clean stuff good? or knock dirt into the oil fill?

does he overtorque filters?

i always used to do all my and my wifes vehicel service. a couple of summers ago.. work got more time consuming, adn a few times i let the wife take hers to 'quickie-car damage and oil changes'. up untill then.. I was very familiar with that oil drain plug it was perfect. I never put in a drain plug that is the least rounded or damaged. too cehap to not replace, and no reason to cause a problem next time fighting a rounded plug.

thus my wrench was the last one on that plug before quickchange.. first time she comes back from quickchange they charged her an extra 5 to repalce the damaged oil drain plug.

imho.. that's a scam to get more $$ OR the moron in the pit that didn't qualify to run a spatula DID strip the oil drian plug.

either way. I ended that short foray into letting someone else wrench on my stuff except my mechanic for the very few things i can't do.

Heh, one time I was filling my truck with gas from a combo pump, and some dude in a Dodge Cummins came up and was glaring at me while he waited in line. I let him glare for a good long time while I finished up fueling the truck, before I opened the hatch and pulled out two yellow 5-gal diesel cans for my Kubota and filled them next. As far as I was concerned, I outranked him on that event, since I was using *both* nozzles on the pump.... The downside there is pumps won't let you switch fuels on the same transaction, so you have to swipe for each fuel.

Near my old house, one lane in the gas station had pairs of pumps in each island, about 20 feet apart so two cars could fuel in each line. I used to love that one when towing my Kubota on a trailer, as I could pull in and start gassing the truck at one pump, then go back and put 5-6 gal of diesel in the Kubota. It was a 50/50 chance whether I could make it happen though, depending on who else was there and how they were parked next to the islands.

I hear you......I've had jerks leave their car at the pump....go inside...use the restroom...buy a hot dog and drink and wonder why people are PO'd when they come outside and get back it their car. Just inconsiderate jerks!!

Most places nowadays will thunk you are running off if you move the car.. Besides, the pump wont reset until they pay anyways..

It is my pet peeve also. Pay attention to your surroundings, and be considerate. And if you have to go in and shop, order, etc., MOVE YOUR CAR FIRST!

Again, if paying inside, why? Pump wont reset until paid..
