4" rotary cutter- new or used and what brand?

I thought I'd start a thread about my search for a rotary cutter. I just purchased a Yanmar 1700D, and while it came with a loader and back blade, it did not come with a cutter. I have been searching Craigslist for used ones, and they are rare as hens teeth, and expensive. Most are of the 5' or larger variety. In fact, the only 4' used cutter is about 200 miles away, no brand name, and he is asking $550. It is shear pin, and looks old and beat up. It is overpriced.

The problem I am having is that I need something soon. I cannot afford to wait weeks upon weeks with the hope that something comes up. I found a brand new 4' Taylor Pittsburgh at the Massey dealer for $1089 + tax. I also found another dealer farther away with a 4' Agriease for $989. Any thoughts?

Oh, I almost forgot, there is a Howse 42" in good shape and the guy is asking $760.

First you need to decide how wide you want your rotary cutter to be.

Some opine for 12" wider than the tractor, sticking out 6" on each side, to facilitate mowing along fences.

Majority recommend a cutter width equal to rear tire width.

I use my rotary cutter for mowing underbrush in the woods of a residential development. My tractor has 59" tire width. I pull a 48" King Kutter Standard Duty Rotary Cutter, Model L48-40. If I can pass the tractor between two trees, I know the cutter will follow. Works for me.

I found my 48" KK rotary cutter in the woods, derelict. The person tasked with mowing the fields had robbed parts from the 48" to keep a 84" KK mower operating, which he pounded every time he used it.

I put $300 of new KK parts on the L48-40 and it has worked very well two seasons with no maintenance other than greasing the PTO universal joints.

King Kutter is known for their cutters. You do not need more than a Standard Duty model from any vender.

Few small tractors have Position Control. To keep front skids of cutter from digging into the turf and to give an even cut you may want to add a set of $30 Zerco Check Chains between the tractor and the mower.

(I have a HOWSE medium-duty Disc Harrow. It is a good implement.)

I had a 4ft. woods brushbull that served me well for about 7 years.Sold it with my smaller massey tractor.I now have a 5ft.taylor/Pittsburgh that has been very dependable also.I guess The top 3 IMHO would be woods,landpride and befco.

A brand new King Kutter at TSC is $899 in these parts. Check yours. It is good quality and should serve you many years.

I don't have a Tractor Supply here, but Del's Farm I think is owned by the same company, and they carry "Countyline" for $999. Not sure of the quality. I am thinking maybe the Taylor Pittsburgh is the highest quality of the three, but not sure.

Some Countyline is KK. Some is Tarter. TSC suppliers vary around the country. I'm sure TSC could order a King Kutter.

Have you looked at a Mahindra dealer? They sell Kodiaks. The one near me has them at a good price.

I give 800 dollars for a new bush hog brand squealer which is 4' wide, it is a good one! I cut brush, heavy stems and saplings with it. Served well so far! LUTT
