Septic Sludge

. . . As long as you have a T on the discharge with about a 2' drop on one side and open on the top and the discharge is taking grey water you should be all set. . .

Agree. That's what you need to do.

BTW, here's a couple of catchy pump truck company names:
Turd Burglar
Stool Bus

$150 to pump/flush/pump a 1000 gal tank in KY. The truck sucks out all it can and then they pump the liquid back into the septic tank to help break up the sludge at the bottom and pump it all out again.

I got to work on the septic yesterday, added T,s to both the inlet and outlet. I did not see the post about not adding a T to the inlet until this morning. My research on the internet and my septic guy said I should have one, he said it helps ensure the solids go to the bottom. Internet research also said the same.

The inlet side had PVC pipe coming in so adding a T to that side was no problem. The outlet on the other hand was the old clay tile, what was sticking out of in the septic was pretty beat up. I had to did out the pipe and cut it off and add a fernco fitting to connect the pipes. The outlet was also at the same level as the inlet, the pipe had settled behind the tank. I had to break out some of the tank so the pipes would connect.

The T on the inlet side I went 12" down, and the outlet side I made the pipe 14" down. The pipe on the outlet side is now about two to three inches lower than the inlet.

I have attached a picture of the T and septic, WARNING, this is a picture of an open septic and may not be suitable for sensitive members. :)

I will now have to get the septic guy back out to pump it again. Thankfully I do not have to pay what some of you are paying, they must treat the stuff like toxic waste in your area to justify such prices. This time I will take the day off from work to remove the covers so he can get a good job done. It will be in a week or two as I am being sent out of town for work.

They make a washable screan type filter that can be installed in place of the outlet T. This is now required in Iowa.

If a home exchanges owners in Iowa, the system must, be inspected, and all upgrades must be made at this time.

I thought about the screen filter, however that would require me to dig down to the cover ever year or two as I only have the one access hole for pumping the system.

I purchased the house cheap knowing it required lots of work. I believe it is the banks require an inspection on a new purchase, but not a refinance. I could be wrong. I purchased the home on a contract for dead, then refinanced about a year later so I had time to deal with the issues when they arose or had time/money to address them.

I really love the property, 40 acres, total privacy, if you don't know my house is there you cannot see it from the road. My avatar is my drive. I told the wife we can fix the house. We have since put in about half of what we paid for the house in improvements. Then again what we paid was just a little over the cost of the land would be with no improvements. Home sat vacant for almost two years. Everyone wants a move in ready home. The wife would have also liked that but she has been a good sport, although the first improvement was redoing the kitchen to keep momma happy. We all know it is best to keep momma happy. :)

We had an older septic system at the house we lived in for about 20 years. As long as we had it pumped every 3-4 years we had no issue. Our tank lids were only a few inches below soil level. The pumper truck guys usally carried a long handled hoe to break up any sludge.

Last time we had it pumped was $400

Did get a bid for a new system out on another property in the Texas hill country. The bids came in much lower than I could have it done here in east Texas. A conventional system at $5300 and an aerobic system $8500
