They are very common here in the southwest of the US as well. Damage from the sun isn't an issue but algae can be. Definitely better off with a black tank to keep light out. Of course a nice dark tank also sucks up the heat of the sun and the water can get quite warm. Putting a shelter around it to keep the sun off is a good idea.

look up "pioneer water tanks" and find someone local to buy from and install. They are galvanized rings they assemble onsite with a thick liner inside and you can have a fire truck connection installed as an option. I have 2 2500 gal plastic tanks and hope to add a 5k pioneer in the future.
