They are very common here in the southwest of the US as well. Damage from the sun isn't an issue but algae can be. Definitely better off with a black tank to keep light out. Of course a nice dark tank also sucks up the heat of the sun and the water can get quite warm. Putting a shelter around it to keep the sun off is a good idea.Its interesting that you don't seem to have much choice in plastic tanks in the US. (Perhaps I am mistaken) But they are very common over here and probably vastly outsell any other type of tank. I've never heard of any problems with them such as getting sun damaged or spoiling the water.
