Picked up a 1970 GMC C3500 dump truck that needs some TLC

You may wan to do some checking around. Some of the racing series require stock parts. Certain casting numbers, both heads and intakes, are in demand because they flow very well. They are usually found on older pickups and farm trucks made in the late 60s and early 70s before emission controls became standard on trucks. You can check with a local engine builder, they should know.

The vortec heads are definitely an improvement, but keep in mind they perform best at higher rpms (3k plus). Try a set of summit iron or dart iron eagle heads. They work better in low rpm/tourqe applications.

We run the Vortec stuff on 350 boat motors. Works great for them. They live thier life in the 3500 to 5500 rpm range 99 percent of the time.

Figured I'd provide an update on the old GMC truck.

A few month ago I busted a lower ball joint while driving over some rough terrain with a load of dirt. It dropped pretty hard!

I used the loader on the tractor to scoop out the dirt, and then the forks to raise the front end.

The upper housing of the ball joint had just given way...

So I hauled it back to my house using a rigged system with my 3pt hitch. It worked fairly well until I had to slow down and kinda messed up the bumper and grille a little.

I was able to pop out the lower ball joint from the A-arm, but getting it out of the knuckle was just about impossible on the truck, so I removed the knuckle and upper A-arm. After working it for a while on a vise using a ball joint press, it finally popped. The upper ball joint came out pretty easy with a wedge fork.

Of course the upper ball joint was the original one that was riveted in. I tried removing one of the rivets with a grinder and hammer and punch with no luck.

Took it to the local service shop, and he had it off in a couple of minutes using an air hammer/chisel. Need to get me one of those!

Napa had the lower ball joints in stock, but they had to order the uppers. Should be here by the end of the week. Given the condition of the 43 year old original upper and lower ball joints on the passenger side, I'm going to do the driver side as well.

The inner joints (where the A-arms attach to the frame) are all solid. They don't make them like that anymore. Nowadays, those are all just rubber bushings, vs. large diameter solid pins. I'll grease them up real good after replacing the grease nibbles. Looks like it has been 10-20 years since they were greased last, but they are still nice and tight. Amazing.

Always nice to have progress reports...

I've been thinking if the right truck were to come along and it would have to be one not subject to smog checks!

Wow, they want real money for one of those, sans bits/chisels, etc:

PH3050B, Hammer, Air, Super Duty (2,500 BPM)

I always buy SnapOn whenever I can afford it. Reason being that it is the first and last one I will ever buy.

I have removed the rivets with a large cold chisel and a 3 lb hammer with no problems. Of course now I have half dozen air chisels, torch and Plasma cutter!
You might have to drill out the holes for the new bolts. ??? It's been years so my memory has faded.

Picked up the replacement upper ball joints from Napa today. Man, the uppers aren't cheap, $100 a piece, vs. $30 for the lowers!

Anyway, got the right side ready for installing the steering knuckle at this point. Getting that lower one pressed in all the way was a major pain as the OEM ball joint press from Auto Zone was not really up to the task. Had to resort to other methods, but finally gut her done.

Back about 10 years ago I wanted a 1 ton dump, something like this 1970 but 4wd so I could plow snow. I really didn't need to go far, 5 miles from the house. I gave up as the cheapest trucks I could find were in the $7000 range. Then I found an international 4wd 2 1/2 ton dump for $800. It cost me almost that much to have it towed up from Mass. I'm not sure if it's the case now but it seamed like people were passing over larger trucks (over 1 ton).

A retired excavation contractor friend has not been able to sell his 30k GVW International with custom dump...

Great Truck, lovingly cared for and work ready...

The problem is anything without the latest CARB approved Diesel is being phased out... I think his is a 1999 and he bought it new... truck plus options was 55k then.

I'm tempted but even at 4 or 5k I would still need a commercial license plus the problems in California with non-compliant Diesel motors...

It sure is a nice truck and heavy duty everything and shiny aluminum wheels and great rubber...

Think he can haul 7 1/2 yards of gravel...

Anyone ever try to de-rate a truck in California to drive with a non-commercial license? Is it even possible?
