Why doesn't TBN....

Offer the members PAID SUBSCRIPTIONS and in return they don't have to endure the constant advertising on the site?

Or a paid "donation"?
Sawmill Creek takes $5 donations and blocks the ads. It seems the pages load a lot faster when my ad-blocker doesn't have to spend 2 minutes blocking doubleclick.

I added a Napa Oil filter to my PC.....seems to have corrected the problem. Do I need to change every 300 hrs??

Blowing milk out my nose..

BINGO !!!!!!! YOU HIT THAT ONE RIGHT ON THE HEAD. I think a great deal of the slowness of TBN for members cursed with dial up is BECAUSE OF THE ADS !!!

Most forums that have tried a pay model have failed. They put ads up because they want to make money. It doesn't cost anything at all for someone who is "in the business" to start a forum such as this, so any income is thousands of percent profit. All they need is to take the time to set up some open source software (being "in the business" means they already have a webserver connected to a proper connection)... Most times these sites are started with no ads, and once the userbase is built, ad systems are implemented to create a revenue stream. Many times when ads get too bad that users begin to complain, other forums start popping up to take their place.

Other than servers (as big as TBN is there are probbaly dedicated servers to run it) and bandwidth (currently ~8k people on TBN and unlike many other forums, TBN hosts many of the pictures on here)...
I suspect that Muhammad and IMC Digital Universe make a fair amount from ads to run this site, but how much is spent on staff? Good DB admins dont come cheap, neither do good web coders.

We have no problem with people running ad blockers or browsers with build-in ad blockers. Over the years I have used them on and off and as a general principle you'll avoid a lot of spyware if you run an ad blocker all the time.

There are a few issues with offering an ad free version of TBN. First, it's difficult for us to put a specific value on what we make off of users since most of the value in advertising is generated when people actually click on ads. So, if you are among the users who never click on ads, we aren't making much off of you anyway. So if you run an ad blocker it doesn't really negatively affect us. The other issue is with some of the ads being integrated into the design of the site. We could remove the ads but the formatting would suffer with large blank spaces. And lastly, I just don't like it when forums ask me for money as I feel that I contribute to the value of the forum. If they shove too many ads in my face I'll just stop posting.

For members who are logged in, you are going to see one ad at the top, text ads in the middle, and one ad on the right side of the page. The forum index has a bunch of small ads down the middle, but no ad on the right side. It's been this way for more than a decade and I feel that it's a good balance that doesn't overwhelm a page with ads, and pays the bills at the same time. I keep an eye on other forums as I'm an active member of several that I didn't start, and while we serve more ads than a select few small forums, we serve less ads than most. And way less than some. For a forum of this size, it's not uncommon to see twice as many ads as we have on every page.
