It is nice to to have someone truly understand. It could have been an older person hanging on and I would have said the same thing. It is about common sense and safety......If people would stop to think a little, here was a person that only had a new tractor for roughly a week with little to no experience himself and is already doing these types of things.... Just imagine as time goes on what might unfold. I am happy that so many people seem to think that this type of behavior is training for children/adults and get away with it day in and day out.... But the day your child or friend is killed or paralyzed for life, don't expect everyone to be so sympathetic and show up to the spaghetti dinner to raise money so you can plant them.....

Again, its all subjective, as I was not there.

But.......How do you know he only had a tractor for a week and that this was his only experience.

Again, I was not there. So I dont know the situation. But I have already said my piece.

I know he just got it roughly a week or so before the incident.... I saw it being unloaded... It was not hidden anywhere prior.. As far as him being an experienced operator the week or so prior I would watch him operate......It doesn't take a lot of time to evaluate someone's skill level.....It is more than subjective it is fact..... Did you ever serve on a jury?

My oldest (when he was about 4) had ridden with me one time and I was hosing off the deck when he decided to put his finger on the muffler. I sure heard it from my wife! He learned a valuable lesson that day. I told him several times how hot it was, but he had to see for himself...

My son, about 5 at the time, grabbed a stick from burn pile with a red coal on the end. I told him several times not to touch it. Well, when he thought I wasn't looking he grabbed it, touching the coal to his chest, burning the skin OFF in a 3/4" circle. He made a horrible face, but didn't let out a peep. He hid it, cause he knew he was told. It was a proud moment for me, most grown men would have yelled, and abiut half probably would have cryed like a baby. Life teaches lessons.

This may not be the proper location but still about safety and children operating tractors.
Been watching our neighbor work with his children farming and then due to economy had to go to work for a service company drilling gas wells. His family continued to farm mowing hay raking bailing round bales .
Stacking silage in a pit packing with tractors. Doing the fence work and working with the cattle. . And as they became older went to a 2 year college to learn gas production methods and upon graduating going to work for these service company's. starting at about 60 K a year. not bad for starting wages. The whole family is now working away from the farm except returning home in the evenings and spending several hours as a family doing the farm work. If the father had waited until the kids were old enough to shave before teaching them how to work. wonder if this family would of had enough interest in the farm to do the work needed.
This is just to say there is hope in the present generation of kids growing up the next may just expect the Gov. to send them a money card .

WOW, proud moment?! Are you kidding? That's how you think children should learn life's 'lessons'? :confused2:

I could explain how stupid that sounds, but you probably wouldn't grasp it - author: me.

I am truly sorry I ever started this post.... I will never start anthor...If he would have stuck it in his eye that would have been even a better lesson..... Or better yet both eyes......Then he surely would have learned a truly valuable lesson...

Man, I'm exhausted after reading 9 full pages of posts on this thread. So many attempts to climb higher than others on the moral high ground.

We are a couple weeks away from having our kids to age 16. For 16+ years these accident stories have make me think twice. Not all kids grasp the risks early but their parents should do it for them. I got Pat's Easy Hitch system to keep the kids out of harms way when they help looking up equipment. If you over protect that can be deadly too. It is driving on the road that is my major concern at their age.

This thread wasn't started about farming, or raising our kids, or about teaching them to work and become responsible adults! The original concern was about giving rides to those who aren't operating from the seat.

We don't protect our kids by sheer force of will or self-righteousness, we do it by preventing unsafe situations, and by teaching them to recognize and avoid them. IMO, toting a toddler on a zero turn or CUT isn't good role-modeling for anyone, either. :)2cents: more.)

btw: It'd be d__ hard for a loved one to be bounced off of a machine they're not riding on as a passenger. I say, if you're not teaching someone to operate, let them watch from a safe distance and observe your moves. Teach them to respect the power/risks, then put 'em in the seat when they can reach the controls and are ready to learn by doing.

O'k I AGREE THE THREAD DRIFTED AWAY FROM THE ORGINAL POST And since I did not see what Big kitty saw and stated in my post may not be correct area of posting. And the hot Weather in Mich. may cause some to drink sour milk.
I will not be bothering the remainder of this thread .
