K&N for 07 gmc 6.6d ?

dieselplace.com is full of reasons not to use a K&N on a newer GM diesel.

Back when we did some machine work for a ATV dealer, we bored jugs that were worn and fitted oversize pistons. Dealer said every one he sent us had a K&N filter on it. One customer we knew told me K&N got involved, not sure who paid who, all I know is we got paid.

If the aftermarket filter gets over-oiled the air mass sensor will be coated and not report the proper amount of air to the engine control module. Some air mass sensors can be cleaned and brought back to life, some are ruined. I've seen many ruined sensors that negated the effect of the high flow air filter because they were over serviced and the customer had to replace the ruined air mass sensor. I have removed many aftermarket air filters for this reason.

Also anytime a complete intake is installed (cold air intake) the air mass sensor SHOULD be recalibrated with the use of tuning software. Intake resonators are installed for a reason, sometimes removal of these during intake install makes drivability worse.

Yeah I'm aware of all that.

The 7.3 doesn't have a MAF. The K&N filters just don't filter well.

I've done quite a bit of reading on the subject as well. There are a couple of sites where they did some pretty detailed testing. Bob the Oil Guy did one, which was O.K. This is another test that seems a little better, but I also read that maybe the testing wasn't done 100% correct. K&N Air Filter Review - Debunking the Myths (and why OEM is better) Bottom line, I won't run a K&N on my stuff. I had one on my Challenger but swapped the filter to an AFE. If you are looking for power gains on a stock engine, sometimes a CAI will pick up some power, sometimes not. Usually not.

Back in the 7.3 days we were allowed to void the engine warranty if they had a drop in K&N. they don't filter as well. The cylinder walls were sandblasted.

what about the repalcement air box style?

If its the same type of filter I wouldn't trust it. I'd really prefer a paper or whatever material OEM is. Just go bigger if more flow is wanted.

My 03 has a square filter, cost $28.99. The 08 has a round filter, cost $59.99. I use AC/Delco and change them every 10,000 miles with the oil. I have not changed anything from stock OEM. I had a K&N on a conversion Tahoe with an aftermarket intake. I don't think they filter as good as OEM but I can't prove it.

My 07 has a round filter with filter minder device. Wouldn't be more economical to replace the filter when the reset hits the red
as long as the filter isn't damaged. My truck only has 8,000 miles on it still the original filter, the minder is still in the green.
Just thinking out loud, Fred

I don't really trust that indicator. I have never seen it move. Diesels need 3 things - clean air, clean fuel and clean oil. Since we only put about 15,000 miles a year on the truck it's not a big expense.

Same here. I have had 3 diesel trucks with minders on them and they never really budged.

I spent 50K plus on each of these trucks so I can afford to do a air filter each 15,000 miles.

I have first hand experience with a K&N drop in, clearly passing fine dust. Had it in from 30k to 120k miles on my last F150. I noticed that the fine dust would collect downstream of the filter, within the bellows. A spot of grease would collect a lot of dust. Engine oil would darken very quickly.

No engine problems on that truck, but at 120k I traded it for a GMC. The ford only had a V6 and really benefited from the extra air (noticeable power increase).

If i were to recommend anything, it would be a lift pump/fuel filter combo from what i hear of the Dmax crowd.
