Total rookie tractor owner here. Just bought the tractor and a 5' Caroni finish mower. While testing it out in the field, the PTO shaft sheared. I can not figure out how to remove it from the mower gear box. Anyone have ideas?

Are you sure it did not just break a shear pin?

A lot of these gear boxes have a splined input shaft but not familiar with the Caroni. Still should have shear pin someplace so expensive PTO shaft is not the weakest link if you hit something.

If it has a "shear bolt" usually a grade#2 1/2 inch bolt.. Then they usually have a "circlip" on the front edge of the smooth PTO shaft going into the mower.. This is to prevent your PTO shaft from flopping around and flying off when the "shear bolt" well.. shears.. I looked on the Caroni site, and see that there are 3 different input shafts. 2 splined and one smooth. Which one do you have?

I am assuming that is mine. It has a plate on it that says "Type 590". Everything else got painted over by the prior owner.
So, let me correct what the issue is. The tractor side of the PTO shaft cracked and split allowing the two pieces to separate.
I have removed the bolt that is under the plastic cover near the gear box, but still can't get the mower side to let loose.

If if is the smooth shaft, did you check for a clip? and if it is splined it should work just like the other end to release the U joint. Either a button or the slide collar or the twist collar.. There are just 3 ways to remove the U joint that I know of. I bet your PTO shaft did not have enought overlap to begin with, (not long enough) ..that is why it split. I am thinking.

I can't feel a pin or button. I will spray the whole thing with PB Blaster to see if I can get something to rotate or slide. Thanks a bunch for the info. I was almost afraid I was going to have to go into the gear box itself with the way my luck goes :laughing:
