Welding table for nebie

OK, I am starting to teach myself to do basic welding via following you-all and watching you tube how to videos. I think I really need a welding table at this point. Is there something available that folds up, but works for basic repairs and small projects? I am pretty limited for space in my current shop.

I'm doing the same thing you are ....teaching myself Mig welding....I noticed Northern Tool has a welding table for $79.00 and then they have folding ones for a little more....I have not checked Harbor Freight yet...I bet they will have an inexpensive one...So far I have fixed my Son's rake...I am waiting for something to break...LOL...I am also practicing....

These are nice that one can clamp your work down nice and tight then begin to tack the work.

My advise is if you are teaching yourself welding you should make a table. It makes a great project and you can make it any size you like. When I made my table I used 1/4" for the top but later cut it off and replaced it with 1/2". The 1/4" sheet just wasn't flat enough. It's on wheels, I can put it anywhere I like and it doubles as a movable workbench.

If you are going to do much welding this is the only way to go. With all the holes in the tables the jigs are endless. I had a project pop up and once you set up the jig it NEVER MOVES and every piece is just like the last one. Yes - very expensive, but for what I was quoted for the project, I bought everything including the welder and STILL HAD money in my pocket.

I understand paying for professional work but around here they rape you - IF they will even give you the honor of calling you back. So now there are three local Welders who will never ever get a dime from me again. They decided to charge outrageous prices that if forced me to just buy everything and do it myself.

Sorta like McDonalds charging $2,000 for a burger, then you will buy a cow and make your own burger with meat left over.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I think that they all have value. At this point I think I will start with one of the fold up models. I really like the idea a building one, and the monster table would be great, once I build a barn, but that is at least a year off. I've done a few small repairs an a Trailer and on the mower deck. But I am also waiting for things to break

Strong Hand NOMAD Welding Table TS3020

I have one of these. Not as heavy as the Miller foldable but half the price at $140 and perfectly good. Free shipping from cyberweld too. Nice clamping surface with slots etc and it usually is sold with a couple of free clamps. It is not the last welding table you'll ever want but even when you upgrade to something much heavier, this one will be useful as a very portable extra.

Glad it worked out. It will always be useful as a portable table even if you end up building a nice custom table.

I got a piece of 1/4" plate a little bigger than my small rolling workbench and just set it on top. Works fine for my small projects and rolls out of the way.
