I got a piece of 1/4" plate a little bigger than my small rolling workbench and just set it on top. Works fine for my small projects and rolls out of the way.
That sounds like a good small project solution. Most however would advise at least 3/8 and preferably 1/2 or above for a welding table top to minimize warpage. Not so practical for a temp solution like you have but if one is going to bother to build a dedicated table, best to go thicker than 1/4.
