I cannot believe how hard it was today to buy a trailer tire mounted on a rim, a spare tire for my new trailer.
Nobody sold the rims, not Goodyear, not PepBoys; it took five places to find them, believe or not at Lowes.
Awful cheesy looking Carlisle bias ply tire made in China. I was tired and at that point, they looked pretty fine to me. As a spare...
After we get back from our trip this week, I'm going to get two new good radials from Amazon. No driving around. I bet I spent twenty bucks in gas today, at least. I even found the home office of Load Rite Trailers, and no, they couldn't sell to me, wholesale only. Bummer. So I took what I could get and will put the spare on tomorrow. And I will carefully set the tire pressure to five pounds under the max on the tire. If I have to run heavy, I'll bump it up, but I'll start at that setting
and watch the wear on the wear indicators after our trip.
So off we go, fully shod with Chinese tires, and not to my liking at all.

Why didn't you order your trailer with a spare?
an eminently sensible question. I was afraid of what tires the builder would put on, and turns out
was right to be, no name Chinese tires that I had never heard of. The trailer came in a week ago and clearly I sat on my hands too long. Oh well, I drive fairly slowly, rarely over 62, and we'll be pulling the trailer with the motorhome so maybe that speed is optimistic.
I normally trade out my tires upon delivery, just didn't get my act together this time and had to settle.
At least the trailer came with a nice heavy duty spare mount, welded into the frame, so at least my Chinese spare won't fall off. sigh.
This Carlisle tire had a poor finish on it, a tread pattern about as sophisticated as a wheel barrow tire, and
plainly looked inexpensive. Well, I'll slather some rubber protectant on it, I use the CRC product distributed by Napa, and hopefully it will sit on that spare mount forever.

did you see what was on the side of the Mastertrack tire? Angler and Radar. ??

I did not see that.
I just read some bad things about them. One guy had 3 blowout in 150 miles.

When i had my trailer tire 'issues' (see above post) - my research showed AT THAT TIME (about 2006ish) they were only rated for 55 mph

Do you have a Sam's club or Costco local?
Sam's sells the greenball-towmaster online for about the same as Costco.

thats as good of an argument errr i mean discussion as tractor brands..
Some ppl like the LT tires and had good luck with them.. I think LT tires have sturdier sidewalls, which is good when on a dual axle trailer when you get the 'twist' as you turn
Others say "you cant run a non-trailer tire on a trailer" .. I think trailer tires have better built in UV protection because typically their life is over due to age rather than miles..
I know some trailer mfg ship their stuff with LT tires..

my local Sam's had one overworked guy in there that said they might have a few tires. Their website though had exactly the Greenball tire I was looking for, on a rim too, for a very good price. It seems few places want to sell rims, or at least stock them.
I had heard somewhere that ST tires had a stiffer sidewall to prevent sway but with Chinese tires who knows. If manufacturers are using a LT tire I guess it is okay. Plus a LT won't be limited to 55-65 MPH. It seems like ST tires have a high blowout rate. LTs are looking more attractive.

The carlisle's i have on my equipment trailer are still going strong. but like the Marathons, i think they are a good 8-10 years old.
Im about to get a set of 4 greenballs for my 2 trailers. My livestock trailer has 2 that dont want to hold air long term and i have an oddball on my equipment trailer that ill turn into a spare.
Costco is $125 for a Greenball.
Yeah but that would mean new wheels too.

When my box trailer needed two 14" 6-ply I found pickings mighty slim... Hankook was the only one with the load rating I needed.
Time will tell... the 6 ply I had are ones I bought 25 years ago and it was time... Hauled many a 1 yard load of gravel and sand over the years...
The old VW campers need the heavy-duty 14" tires that have all but disappeared too.

I don't have my receipt handy but that's ($125) about what I paid for my 4 tires, load range E, w/ mounting. W/O Rim!
My Costco didn't have rims.
Now I'm kicking myself for NOT finding the Sam's price
