I've seen a copy of the official request from Cummins, Navistar, et al (EMA) for the 460 micron wear scar limit - that's what Canada went with for ULSD. At the risk of understating the obvious, Big Oil has better lobbyists in Washington than the EMA, so the USA ended up at 520 micron ULSD mandated. That 1 page EMA request document is public, I may have it on another machine, or it may be floating around here on TBN already.

Attached pdf gives some background.

TC-W3 two cycle oil, pretty cheap and can be bought at any Walmart in the country. I don't add the recommended 1 oz. per gallon, just a couple ounces when I fill up.

I use Stanadyne
2 cap fulls in every 5 gal. so about a oz.
It should help upper end lubricity

I'm with most other posters. My engine uses so much less fuel than my previous gas motors I don't store any fuel anymore. I only fuel up when down to 1/4 tractor tank, and then only 5 gals. Heck, that's only every 2.5 weeks now - used to be multiple times a week with my gassers. Have 70 hours now on new tractor in 2.5 mos.

Anyway, I spike with OptiLube-XPD for lubricity boost & cetane boost. When winter comes, then the water demulsifier & pour point depressant are important up here also. The cetane boost & detergents also keep the injector nozzles cleaner = power retention for longer time.

Why risk shortened life of a $1,000 fuel injection pump for a few cents every fuel up?

Some good data in this article, and it also talks about the fuel transportation/source additive issues today (as in additives often needing to be added downstream of the refinery).

Ultra Low Sulfur Facts

I only put additives in the older equipment that was not designed for the current ultra low sulfur diesel. .

:) that's the only kind of equipment i have. :) the older stuff! :)

I use the Fitch Fuel Catalyst in every gas or diesel engine that I own. They last a lifetime of the engine. Never have any fuel problems!

I only put additives in the older equipment that was not designed for the current ultra low sulfur diesel. tI have a filter (water and particulate) on my bulk tank. I've never had to change it. My mini excavator has a clear bulb that you are supposed to drain when it gets half full of water. With 260 hours on the ex over five years (it sits a lot too), here is zero water in the bulb. Bottom line, I don't believe there is a need for additives. YMMV.

Modern Diesels are not designed for ULSD either. ULSD is for lowering emissions but as far as performance and protection you should be using some type of additive.

Also all modern diesels are optimized for a cetane rating of 50+. Where can you find diesel that is rated for 50 cetane. Will a diesel run on 40 cetane, sure. But it will run better. More power, less smoke, easier starting etc with a higher cetane rating.

Secondly an additive that adds lubricity back in the fuel will prevent wear on injectors, injector pumps.

All I can say is if it were mine what would I do? I would run a good fuel additive that has cleaning capabilities, lubricity and boost cetane rating to help get the most out of that diesel both in terms of performance and longevity.

YMMV
