Flies in my pole barn!

Most all rose plant dusting powder has pyrethrin it. Check the ingredients. Anyhow, lets kill some flies. Cut the top off an aluminum soda can, wash and dry it good. Put four heaping tablespoons of this powder in the can and ignite the powder with farmer matches. It will burn and smoke like punk. Put a couple of these cans of burning powder in your barn, close up the barn and GET OUT OF THE BLDG. Don't leave any animals in the barn while its smoky. Also put the pop cans on something metal - the pop cans will get very hot. This will kill all the flies, bees, yellow-jackets etc etc and actually is not really too good for people or animals to breath. Let the cans burn until they go out by themselves - 2-3 hrs. It has a lasting effect also so you can expect flies to die for perhaps a month after you treat the bldg.

FWIW........

The pyrethrins are a pair of natural organic compounds normally derived from Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium that have potent insecticidal activity. Pyrethrins are neurotoxins that attack the nervous systems of all insects. When present in amounts not fatal to insects, they still appear to have an insect repellent effect. Pyrethrins are gradually replacing organophosphates and organochlorides as the pesticide of first choice. They are non-persistent, being biodegradable, and break down on exposure to light or oxygen. The chemical structure of pyrethrins inspired the production of a variety of synthetic insecticides called pyrethroids such as bifenthrin, permethrin, and cypermethrin.

A 2011 study found a significant association between piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a common additive in pyrethroid formulations, measured in personal air collected during the third trimester of pregnancy, and delayed mental development at 36 months. Children who were more highly exposed to PBO in personal air samples (≥4.34 ng/m3) scored 3.9 points lower on the Mental Developmental Index than those with lower exposures.

granular/powder fly bait, the stuff is controlled is some states/provinces so a license may be needed but if you can get some, man that stuff will have you wearing out brooms from sweepin up flies.

p.s. make sure that no cats/dogs/pets can get to the mixture, it will kill everything virtually instantly. rats/mice/racoons/possums all pests have been known to get to this stuff and die instantly, so be careful with it.

all farm supply/tsc stores all carry fly bait.

Do you have a name for the bait or better yet the chemical name of the ingredients. I have a problem with possums which so far has taken 2kg of pindone a month (at around $60 a hit) for the last 11 months. The next up product available is cyanide but you need to be a professional and have licences as long as your arm.

Fly tape. Do a search on fly tape. It is a 1/4" wide strip of sticky tape. No pheremones. When the flys swarm in the spring and fall, pheremone traps don't seem to do much but the flys are attracted to the bright white and will readily land on fly tape. Just Google (or whatever browser you like) fly tape. Amazon and others carry it. No need to spray.

I had a dozen fly tapes hanging in my windows, the brownish roll-out sticky kind, not white. Anyways, it caught some flies but the fly population was huge. For three years I swept dead flies up by the dust pan full. I guess they died of old age, I dunno. The sills and floor would be black with dead flies all along the window wall. Sometimes I had to get out the shop vac.

Eventually and reluctantly I turned to spraying and that seemed to be the only thing that started making a dent in them. The population is down to a livable, no spray needed level now. I don't let my overhead door hang open at all anymore, I think that helps too but it is a pain not to have the fresh air and ventilation when working out there.

I don't know how or why they got started in that garage. There have never been animals, feed, plants, etc. in there.

Pole barn...concentrating at the top of the building for reasons not known (maybe something like sap in the framing wood common in pine). Sounds like fumigation of some sort is needed. I don't like to use any chemicals on anything if I can help it but sometimes you have to do it. Just follow the instructions. Go fishing or something.

Well I fired off 3 bug bombs last night. We'll see how they work. I know it killed some of the flies!
