Decided I wanted to get a tractor before the end of summer so I can get started this fall on our 30 acres.

Stopped by the New Holland dealer and noticed the new WorkMaster 35 and 40's. Really like the rugged utility of these especially with the Shuttle Shift.

Any experience with them? I'm not brand loyal, would anything else compare to these tractors I should be looking at?

We have NH, JD, Kubota, KIOTI, and Yanmar within driving distance.

I looked at the Workmasters before buying my last no frills mowing tractor a MF 2635.

Be advised that the main transmission in the work masters is synchronized in third and fourth only. This was a show stopper for me.

The 2600 line from MF is a basic, no frills, old tech engine/transmission/differential line that specs out better than competitive models from CNH and Kubota, is considerably heavier and less costly.

These tractors are not Kubotas so do not expect initial build quality to be to the same standards but this is reflected in the price and your warranty and dealer should take care of initial defects.

I have almost all New Holland equipment and the LS sourced stuff is not the quality I have come to expect. Our last tractor for the farm was a Massey 5470 and it is a real "man". This is of course not the type tractor you speak of, but I would hope you don't plan to do any real heavy duty large tree pulling with a workmaster. I agree you should look at a 2635 if that is enough horsepower. I have bought around a dozen NH's in the past 20 years and the dealer is a good friend. He doesn't recommend the LS sourced stuff. The compacts built by Shabaura are/were the best on the market. We have 3 of them (3 of us own a farm together) and they are all 12 to 15 years old and still run like brand new and have had zero problems with them. Maybe look for a low hour used one?? Stay away from LS would be my recommendation if you plan on a long term investment. I also am very partial to hydrostatic transmissions in this size range. Try one before you buy a "geared" machine.....I don't think you will look back.

Funny, we have two local dealers that used to carry NH, both now carry LS, and are very happy about it. The mechanic at the dealer where I bought mine says he feels like the Maytag repair man....he preps them, and never sees them again. The LS sub-forum only has 4 years of posts in it, but the number of problems is very small, and most are relatively insignificant.

The thing people always seem to conveniently forget about buying a NH made by Shibaura is how expensive, and hard to find parts are getting for some older models....think something like the 1100, 1200, etc. there's no saying that won't continue with newer models.

Guess it comes down to whether you want to support an Italian company (Fiat) or a Korean company.

I can't comment on this because we have never bought anything except filters, etc. for routine maintenance. I will say that parts for the mower decks (not part of the tractor) are as high as a mink coat!

Soooo ironpen, Isn't it a bit warm in Alabama to be wearing a mink coat while mowing? :)

It is, but I guess my wife would like one......a whole lot more than mower spindles. <G>
