Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

If I was inclined to jump in the Windows 8 water, I defiantly would wait for a touch screen laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. Try out different brand name laptops with touch screen and go with a minimum of a fast Intel 5, preferably a Intel 7 processor.

Intel 5 or 7 processor, price is important go with the 5 unless your dead set on doing virtualization.

You left out the biggest piece of junk, Windows ME. Windows 8 to me is just like Windows ME.

he didn't leave out ME. you just didn't read his post very well. :)

Right on.

I have two desktops, side-by-side. One for me, one for the wife. Mine is an i7 w/16GB RAM and hers is an i5 w/8GB RAM. Hers has a much better video card while mine uses the on-board Intel video graphics. If you go to Start>Computer>System Properties and read the Windows Experience Index number on your Windows machine, you will get an idea of the overall power of your machine as it compares to other configurations. Because of the video card, my i5 computer has a higher performance rating than my i7 does. Judging by eye with programs we both use, I would say that in many instances, her machine seems faster. I'd bypass the i7.

video has always been a big bottleneck for that style architecture

Reading this post reminds me of one thing. Now that ive ordered my new laptop, i should go out and shoot my old laptop with my Saiga 12 tomorrow.

I REALLY hated that old HP6000 piece of crap.

I didn't even bother reading previous posts...but just my opinion..

UNLESS...you are going to be using the system with a touch screen display...STAY AWAY from Win 8.0....they have already come out with a "patch" (Win 8.1)...

My advice is...if you can't find a Win 7 system...buy a bare bones box (everything but an O/S) and install Win 7...

Just curious -- what are the problems with Windows 8?

Steve

Steve I have had Win 8 for about a year. Tried the fixes and sometime it helps but will return to Win 8 on reboot.
My problem is I'm left handed and the split touch bar will return to previous link or some other what ever it decides and lets me figure out where I was looking.

Right side of split touch pad allows use like sys 7 so being like left handed my aged curled fingers will hit left side as I touch right side and the screen begins to act like a teenager with ADHD and quit there meds. more like a cat tossed into a dog pen since the little bit I've typed I have been to Fox News. Bing screen and a relook at my E-Mail screen.
Remember the old teletype keyboard where had to type at rate of machine. and one finger type because of sticky keys. ?
Now have talked to H-P Solutions ( Ha Ha) They have answers to everything but Win 8 problems.
Tried to learn how to type right handed Be better if used my foot.
Have put it on shelf for a month then will retry no good.
Tried to give to a teenager she looked at it said no thanks her Apple is easier to figure out.
Always updates before can log on to get e-mail
Then the search bar I know what program I'm looking for but this thing tries to to anticipate the program and give 1/2 doz. suggested locations.

Want me to go to twitter or tweet some one I don't know for what ever reason.,

My Sys.7 will down load Say Fox News live and can watch with out always buffering the video. Win 8 some times can say 3 words before screen freezes and updates the buffering Slow.

This enough or want more Win 8 griping.

I'm not counting stuff like NT and 2000 because I think they were more business OS's, but NT was crap and 2000 worked okay sometimes.

Look back, I included ME (Millennium Edition) in the Win 98 line. I just abbreviated it to one word "Millennium"

It's new and a lot of people don't like new.
Exactly.

Win 7 is a fine OS and there are still plenty of systems out there you can get with it installed from Newegg or TigerDirect. Win 8 also works fine and the Metro interface makes sense for the type of mobile computing that is becoming the way more and more people use computers and the internet. Don't want to use it? Then don't. I never do but I appreciate how fast it boots up and how stable it is. Win 8.1 will address a fair amount of the issues people have been having with adjusting to Win 8. Go into it expecting to hate it and have problems and I guarantee that you will.
