I currently own a 2013 BX 25...which has been a heck of a machine. I'm about to buy some more land and want to step up to a B2920. How much more fuel will the 2920 use compared to BX25? A lot more or not much more? I know this is kind of generic, but if it was a lot more, I may stick with the BX25. Thanks

Estimates of diesel fuel consumption from the ag. engineering literature range from 0.044 to 0.048 gallons per hour per PTO horsepower under "average" conditions.

My experience with most tractors and industrial equipment, the fuel tank is sized to give you roughly a full 8 hour days work at throttle. So you might be able to compare fuel capacity.

Just like most cars and trucks try to size the fuel tank to give you approximately 300 miles of driving between fill ups.

Are you comparing a 29hp engine to a 23hp engine. If this is the case, then at full load, the 29hp engine will use approximately 26% more fuel than the 23hp engine. So, using the formula Steve gave us above, the 23hp engine can consume 1.06gph at full load, while the 29hp engine can consume 1.33gph at full load. Not much of an increase. But, how much more capability and TIME saved can you experience with the 29hp engine. Can the same mowing task be done in less time with a wider cut on the 29hp tractor? If so, you fuel consumption between the two may be the same since we are talking gallons per hour. Philip.

Philip,

The wording of my post may have been confusing. Both estimates of fuel consumption were under "average" conditions. One study estimated consumption at 0.044 g/h/hp while another estimated consumption at 0.048 g/h/hp.

I have seen a study that provides adjustment factors for different field operations (e.g., deep tillage versus raking hay). I can dig up the study if anyone is interested.

To be precice, you need the engine performance curve for each engine, and the load on the engine. I am not being precise, just close and practical. The D782 engine in my GR2120 has a BSFC of .43lb/hp*hr, which calculates to 1.2gph at full load. The V2003 engine in my L3940 has a BSFC of .42lb/hp*hr, which calculates to 2.6gph at full load. As you can see, these Kubota non-turbo engines has about the same BSFC. At the end of the day, the proposed B2920 is going to use a little more fuel than his BX25, but can he do it in less time with wider mower, which will actually yield the same amount of gallons per job. Philip.

I remember Soundguy did some study with a couple of his tractors with regard to fuel consumption mowing a particular sized parcel. It seems that his small HP tractor used the same amount of fuel as the larger HP tractor mowing that parcel. Yes the larger HP used more fuel per hour, but it took less hours to perform the task which is what you gain with larger tractors over smaller one. If you use the same size equipment but go up a gear you would do the same work in less time however if you used the same equipment and continued to travel at the same speed, you may burn a bit more fuel. It would depend on load factor of the engine. If the small tractor is loaded heavily it will burn more fuel so the lighter loaded larger tractor may still be comparable in fuel consumption.
I think you will find that for a given amount of work, both tractors will burn approximately the same amount of fuel for a given task. If your time is worth something to you, then you may come out cheaper on the bigger tractor.

Thanks everyone for your input. Now all I got to do is explain this to the wife on why bigger gets the job done faster...so I can spend more time with her of course! =0)

You might want to think about this -- she might not be keen on that prospect.:)

Ok, I've recognized how my last response could be interpreted a couple different ways. The wife just asked me why the big Texas smile on my face.😁

I should have said something like:

Now all I got to do is explain to the wife why a bigger tractor will allow me to complete my outdoor landscaping "jobs" faster which in turn would allow me to spend more time with her. Now, of course, I'll be able to tackle more "jobs" with a bigger tractor. Not that I don't want to spend time with the wife...but tractor time is thinking and relaxation time. Hope this clarifies. 😄
