Hi Tom.

We finished with two coats of minwax english chestnut 233 and one coat of polyurethane. We used a sprayer to spray everything then just wiped off the excess. The sprayer was a lifesaver.

Jeremy

I have done a few similar projects for clients and came up with this solution for fast and easy finishing.
I use a sponge and danish oil and simply wipe a coat of oil onto the boards. After all the goal is to seal the wood (maybe tinting as well). Label on the oil indicates that while called 'oil' it is a poly based product. Goal being to seal and tint and unlike a floor or furniture not to provide wear protection.
One upside is that since using a sponge the dustiest surface gets wiped clean as you apply the finish and simple occasional wring out of sponge clears all dirt and grime leaving a perfect finish.
I have jobs that are now 20 years aged and still look as good as the day we did them.
We are talking 'natural look' here and not high gloss. (certainly glossy walls and ceilings would be ugly IMHO anyway)

The ceiling looks great. You really are getting a feeling for how nice that room will be. I was wondering how wide are tongue and groove boards that you used. I am planning a project that would have a wood ceiling and am trying to figure out what size boards to use. Thanks Rick

Hi Rick - we used 1x6 pine. The boards we used had a 5-1/2 inch side as well as a groove running down the middle of the opposite side to make it look like 3". Due to the height of the ceiling we chose to use the wider side. Anything smaller and I think it would have looked too busy.

The ceilings were finished up today. Tar paper and rafters started as well and should be done tomorrow. Here's a few more pics now that it's all finished.

A few new pics. The great room and loft with the t&g ceiling have been spray foamed. We filled the 2x6 rafters with closed cell foam that should give us an approx R36 ceiling. Front porch is done along with rafters on part of the north wing. We also started block for the stone columns and footings for the outside stairs. Scissor truss accents went up today. That part was a 5 man job. King and jack studs were framed in next to and under the trusses to support them.

Looks good, the timbers sure look nice. What is the cost of closed cell spray foam in your area?

Hi Dave. Ours ran about .85 sq/ft per inch for closed cell.
