I can't figure out all the hype over the 308. It might of been great in its day but this new gen ammo seems so much better.

Same could be said of a number of cartridge, say 30-06...

The 308 holds it own, recoil is moderate, is very accurate, and you can find it anywhere(223, 308,30-06).

Run out of ammo, accidentally leave it behind on hunting trip out of state etc. You can find good reliable 308; not necessarily true for new cartridges, short magnums etc.

Didn't see it mentioned earlier, have you looked at the new Savage Arms Model 11/111 Lady Hunter. It's not a youth gun. The rifle is literally built for women. Calibers are: 223 Rem., .22-250 Rem., .243 Win., 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Win., 7 mm-08 Rem., .308 Win., .30-’06 Sprg.

The .308 is still used as a "sniper" rifle by our military,yes there are bigger with more bang but it still has a place.

.308 is popular with long-range shooters. At my home range they occasionally have mile shoots and most are shooting .308.

A 270WSM ballistics shows it's faster, flatter and carries more energy than a same grain .308 and being a smaller caliber it likely has less recoil. I'm sure the .308 works wonderful but my choice would be a 270WSM hands down. I'm also not the type that would fling a lot of lead through it either. Sight it in and 1 bullet per whatever animal tag/tags I get.

Anyway, not after a caliber shootout. I just think the new ammo is under rated by many old school shooters.

308 is more affordable, available anywhere now and even in the future if civilians were banned form purchasing ammo.

As for range and power? I've shot seven moose, all under 200yards. Three at less than 50ft.
