Too many people are busy working their tails off and charging more just to stay afloat to take time out to talk politics. Being involved in feeding their kids is all they have time for. Not saying it's right or wrong, that's for each individual to make their own determination; it's just a fact.

Count me in that description.

That's just a fact too.

The OP is the future of all retirees. His post should be a wake up call. Most people don't wake up though. Maybe some will hear this alarm. Maybe most won't.

Some like snooze buttons. Some don't have time to hit them.

Some retire to do what they wanted. Then find out they can't. Because the world changed while they were too busy to get involved in it.

Do you hear that? The OPs post has an old ring to it.

that is so true. I don't even think about retirement. I just figure I will work until I am batty.

I've found that (typically) the "wow that's expensive" attitude usually comes from folks that always worked for someone else. Paid vacation, paid sick leave, partially paid or fully paid healthcare.

It is my experience that most W-2 employees have no idea that their $X/hr wage actually cost the employer two or three times as much.

yep. JUST looking at payroll taxes re-employment ins and no benefits like employer subsidized health insurance.

every payroll dollar costs my co 1.402$

Add in the health and anything else that is a benefit, or otherwise compensation without work like vaca and sick time, bonus.. etc. and yeah.. way easy to get multipoles.

and yeah.. i think the average w=2'er has no clue about that.

Your company's data are in line with the national average for private industry as reported in the most recent BLS compensation survey (Employer Costs for Employee Compensation news release text): wages and salaries constituted only 70.3% of employer costs on average.

I don't know the details of American numbers, but I suspect the overall structure is the same as Canada.

1) The various types of Payroll taxes add up to an obscene number.

2) Companys get significant tax breaks for buying capital equipment.

3) Always cracks me up when a govt spokesman starts talking about employment initiatives.

Directly and indirectly, govts are responsible for adding huge costs to running a business.

I'm curious about your payroll taxes north of the border. The US Social Security taxes are 6.2% each for employer and employee (up to a wage of $113,700 in 2013) and Medicare taxes are 1.45% each for employer and employee (without limit).
