Please explain how option #2 worked.
Did the PTO stop every time the clutch was pushed in?
Did you have engage the PTO lever on the side with the clutch pushed in?

If so, sounds like what he has (but never knew JD sold this set up)
I had a JD 850 with the transmission driven PTO and that is how it worked.

Transmission driven pto on JD utility tractors operated the same as the world renowned Ford 8N. Push clutch pedal down both transmission & pto loose power simultaneously. While I was employed at a JD dealer I never saw a new generation utility tractor equipped that way but it was an option.

I hope duke7595 will post a photo of the PP. I know the inspection hole in clutch housing isn't very large but a photo or PP part number might help solve his tractors pto problem.

One of the old John Deeres we had you would push the clutch all the way in then engage the lever for the pto, and as you let the clutch out a little bit the pto would start turning but you would not be moving, you would then put it in gear and start moving as you let the clutch out the rest of the way. You could stop and start the tractor from moving but the pto would keep turning until you pushed the clutch all the way in, maybe this is how your tractor should work.

Thats how a 2 stage clutch (#3 in TX Jim's list above) works.

duke7595, I had a 1975 JD 1120 for many years. Your 3rd picture of the clutch pedle and the PTO lever is identical to what I had, as well as the two gear shifts - gears 1-4 on the right, HI, LO, reverse and park on the left. Depressing the clutch part way( going to say half way, could be more) allows the operator to change the transmission gears. Depressing the clutch fully to the foot deck allows engaging or disengaging the PTO. You should feel the different stages engaging as you depress the clutch. As others have indicated there is a clutch problem. Maybe your mechanic attempted to install a "will fit" single stage clutch assembly instead of original 2 stage Deere parts. My neighbour had a 1020 a few years older and his operated the same way.

I went back to your original post. Someone here has mentioned that the 1020 was available with a single stage clutch or no PTO - news to me for sure. I always thought that Deere was one of the leaders in promoting of "live PTO" or the 2 stage clutch. Anyway, suggesting that you have to pre-engage the PTO then start the tractor is just plain wrong. You have a clutch problem that the mechanic has failed to fix for you. Find a mechanic that has worked on a green tractor maybe once or twice.

I just did the following.

1. Clutch depressed does not engage under load

2. Tractor in neutral, clutch depressed still grinds

3. Lever engaged without clutch depressed no grinding "with out load"

4. In gear or in neutral, will not engage with load.

I'm going to talk to the mechanic tomorrow, is there anything I should tell this man, I don't want to "bad mouth" his work unless you guy's feel I'M justified in doing so.

One other thing, I'm proud to be a part of of this site, a great bunch of guys here.

Please try to take photo through inspection hole of PP or furnish PP part number.

I agree with you, I have 2 other 1020 J.D. tractors all have the 2 stage, I bought this 1020 because it was very cheap, the clutch was out.

My mechanic has done a lot of work around this area for over 30 years, and has always done right by me and others, if not i would have heard, news travels fast in small farm towns.
This is what has me puzzled, I know the man could change a clutch/PB in his sleep and a very nice guy to boot, just can't understand why he would say such a thing
his work has always been guaranteed and I know he stands behind this policy. I can't figure this one out.
