duke7595, I had a 1975 JD 1120 for many years. Your 3rd picture of the clutch pedle and the PTO lever is identical to what I had, as well as the two gear shifts - gears 1-4 on the right, HI, LO, reverse and park on the left.
I went back to your original post. Someone here has mentioned that the 1020 was available with a single stage clutch or no PTO - news to me for sure. .

As I stated JD offered a trans. driven pto option BUT I've never seen a tractor with that option. There's always a 1st time for everything. FYI The clutch pedal, gearshifts & pto control lever would look identical for both dual-stage clutch & trans driven pto.

I agree with you, I have 2 other 1020 J.D. tractors all have the 2 stage, I bought this 1020 because it was very cheap, the clutch was out.

My mechanic has done a lot of work around this area for over 30 years, and has always done right by me and others, if not i would have heard, news travels fast in small farm towns.
This is what has me puzzled, I know the man could change a clutch/PB in his sleep and a very nice guy to boot, just can't understand why he would say such a thing
his work has always been guaranteed and I know he stands behind this policy. I can't figure this one out.
Jim I found my camera will have you pic asap

Jim I will have to try and get the part number I can't do the other.

I'm curious as since you posted other photos of the 1020 why you can't remove the round inspection cover and take a photo of the PP? All I'm searching in for is thickness of PP. Look at the differences in the way the 2 PP are constructed. 1st photo dual stage clutch. 2nd photo trans driven pto.

I am sorry about that I misplaced it, I found it sitting on the tractor seat.

I think the PP in photo is for a dual stage clutch which would indicate the mechanic that replaced it needs to redo the clutch job. As I previously stated it could be incorrect finger adjustment or a warped pto clutch plate.

Jim when had the tractor apart he showed me the old parts, well at least the P.P. the clutch was in pieces, he told me that this clutch was odd and that J.D. used
a variety of different applications. I do know he had some difficulty finding the right clutch disk, and was adamant that it is a single stage.

I'm trying to cover every base before i talk w/ him tomorrow, let me take some more pics. and send them to you, just to make sure.

You know, I don't even own a JD like this, but I am truly interested to see how this turns out. I guess it is the thrill of the "chase"

See if you can get/reveal any casting numbers. I saw a number on a PP finger but couldn't read it. Yes JD did use a few different clutch assemblies but they're a long way from as scarce as "hen's teeth". The dual stage PP assembly comes with pto assembled in it so to a novice it might appear as as a single stage clutch.

Jim I bumped the starter to give you a different view, can you tell if it is a 2 stage or single, as he stated, or anything else.
