The crooks broke into my shipping container

Let dead threads rise again!

Unfortunate I have had several experiences dealing with thieves and vandals, both in the city and rural areas. While there are all kinds of thieves and vandals: smart, dumb, bold, stealth, and etc, there are basic evaluations each crook performs even if he or she doesn’t know it.

• Is the risk worth the reward? Keep in mind the reward may not needed to be that great, but it still needs to be a reward in the thief’s mind.

• Is the effort worth the reward?

• What the probability of arrest and jail time?

If you can present a situation that affects one or more of these evaluations in the negative it will almost guarantee they will leave your stuff alone.

For example: if the crooks think there's a Lamborghini in the storage container I can guarantee you they will keep trying to break in. Even if a few of them get arrested, electrocuted or injury. The crooks just see the risk worth the reward.

But if the crooks think there just a manure spreader with a few basic tools inside that well secured container and the fact that it smell like **** and there is manure outside the container to reinforce that thought a major if not all trouble makers will walk right pass it. Of course there is always that one in a billion idiot that needs a manure spreader so then you need to make him think it easier to steal one somewhere else.

PS: The extremely hazardous toxic waste sign will work until the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) or Fire Department show up asking what's in the container and fines you for false labeling.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread from the dead, but it is pertinent since my property is in western WA, and I am putting a shipping container there for tools, tractor, etc. I am worried about somebody breaking in, but it comes with a welded on lockbox which the company thinks is very strong. In order to breach it they would have to have a cutting torch or angle grinder. I guess if they want my stuff that bad they will get it. I had my 5th wheel stored in a locked facility with video surveillance and came back to find the entry door ruined due to thieves trying to break in. It's only a $2,000 repair. I am scared to leave my tractor and tools down there, but I can't continue to pay storage fees and my 4 acres is where my stuff is going.

Good question and no easy answer. Make it difficult as well as not worth the effort or risk. With all of the portable tools out today, grinders, cutters, saws, it's pretty difficult to keep someone out that is determined. If you are willing to spend even a little you can get a wireless camera with cell service fairly cheaply. You will need power but you can watch remotely 24/7. There may be other options.

Can you put a fence around the container or in the front of the door? Can the container be either hidden well or exposed well to neighbors? How far do you live from this property?

There are shipping container locks made, but some only lock the door latch bars. Others lock the doors. Ignore the ones that lock stacked containers together or to a truck bed.

A lock of any kind only keeps the honest honest! A thief is a thief and if he is determined then most likely he will get in or at least cause enough damage trying that its gonna cost you money. Sad to say the best defense is an insurance policy!

What about a guard dog?... or even better a recording of a dog barking inside set off by a motion detector?

We've had several containers broken into on jobsites, it does help a little with the better locks, but then locks are really only for
honest men and dogs.

Engraving your drivers license number onto the equipment has helped returned a few items to us, otherwise, schedule your equipment on your insurance policy.

(,,,and yes, the best policies begin with a .4x for the caliber)

I know this has nothing to do with items being stolen or breaking in, but just another example of crappy humans. Dad and I spent some time at our new land in East Texas, met the folks who live in the area along with a few of the farmers owning 1k+ acres surrounding us as well. We repaired our fences and put "No Trespassing" signs with our contact info at all of the old cut open entrances. A month later my uncle who is a Highway Patrol in the neighboring county stopped by just to check it out and said all of our signs had been torn off and the fences cut and pulled down. Not sure why folks want to vandalize and/or ruin something that isn't theirs. If they wanted in the property that bad, the southern entrance is wide open and un-fenced/gated. Folks just throwing our hard work and money away drives me nuts.

A sea box on one of our projects had a substantial amount of copper pipe stolen from it on a weekend. It didn't matter that we had a very robust locking method for the doors. The thieves cut a hole in the opposite end and slid 20 foot lengths of copper out. If they want something it's hard to stop them. At least with cameras you might be able to catch them.
