Too bad you simply can't dispatch thieves. I've no use for them. what happened to the good ole' days when a thief got a free 'rope-swing' ride ??? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

( guess justice has now become 'new & improved'.. based on what I heard on the radio yesterday about the MJ trial... )

Soundguy...I agree with you 100% ..about 3 yrs. ago I sold some property next to a 22 acre farm I own...and the fella that bought it decided he would use my farm as well and began breaking down fence and gates and riding his and his friends atvs all over and fishing in the lake and throwing their trash around..I stopped it..but as I was driving away I spotted my neighbor across the street working on his fence ..he was in his late 80's and owned about 1,000 acres...(he has since passed away ) I stopped and told him of the problem I was having since he owned property that adjoined what I sold..He said it is too bad we can't handle them like would have 20 yrs. ago...I said - yep sure is...Know what I mean _-?

Vsshooter, Welcome to TBN... and that's a very good suggestion  since several members have these cargo containers... would be better if you had photos of your idea! but that's ok, too, and again, welcome to TBN :drink:

We use a chain with a padlock on our front gate. A few months before deer season, we put a small Mul-T-Lock on Schedule 80 chain to secure the gate. Sure enough, some yahoo took a hammer to the lock, repeatedly, thinking he could bust it because it was small. He also put a hack saw and bolt cutters on the chain. None of his ideas worked, although he did cut a 1/64th inch deep slice in the chain.

Figuring he would come back, we put a larger schedule 100 chain (about $8.00/foot) and the large Mul-T-Lock on the gate. So far, no tell-tale nicks, scratches, or dents in the hardware. It won't stop thieves from driving their truck through the locked gate, but they will leave pieces of the vehicle behind if they do. A couple of weeks ago I noticed Weyerhaeuser uses shrouded Mul-T-Locks on their gates also.

Down side is that one time a hunter with bolt cutters tried unsuccessfully to cut a good lock and chain. Having failed to get in, he pounded a rat-tailed file into the key way. We had to use a cutting torch to get the chain off.

The great thing is, with this site it bubbles back to the top. Old doesn't make it useless. :D :D

To get this back to the original subject:
I'm looking at putting a 40' container out, hopefully this summer. Has anyone looked into getting a service like ADT Intrusion Detection Systems - ADT for their remote equipment shed?

If I'm storing $30K worth of tractor and equipment I can justify an extra $40 a month for piece of mind.

And old threads are good threads.

In a former life I worked for a company that supplied the motion detectors, glassbreak sensors, and magnetic switches to ADT. For that matter, we supplied the smoke detectors and CO detectors as well.

I know when I was working there we were working on "pet immune" motion detectors. ADT was losing money every time one of their detectors went off. They did the math and came back and told us it was actually cheaper for them to pay off on a robbery where the alarm didn't go off then to have false alarms.

It's been 11 years since I worked there. I know you need to have power to the area, and when I was there they required a phone line. Nowadays they probably will also do a cell phone type installation if you have service in the area.

The problem is that the motion detectors only work once the thief is inside. Of course, once the thief is inside, they can take what they want and be gone in 5-10 minutes, which might be well before law enforcement shows up, especially if it is a remote area.

So, if you do a motion detector install, you'll want a two stage entry point. The first would be a simple wood structure at the entrance. This would house a motion detector, which wouldn't go off until the thief got inside the structure. Then you do your "hard to open" lock, etc where they would have to spend some time to get it open. This would give the local law enforcement a chance to respond and nail the bad guys.

It also wouldn't hurt to have a game camera set up to snap a photo, just in case they didn't make it through the second door, or in the even the law enforcement didn't show up.

He had better luck than Fresno City Police Dept. had at their remote training facility in the Sierra foothills. A few years ago, thefts broke-in and 20 pounds of C4 and det caps. Major man-hunt. But they get them.
