Suggesting that he wasn't being honest before is both pushing the limits of forum rules, and quite possibly completely wrong. You think it's impossible that this thread made him think about things he hadn't thought of before, or that he learned a few things along the way? Other people mentioned things like stop reports, etc, that could ave sparked an idea....

Hey, let's just start out with the assumption that someone is lying, and then call them a liar, just because it's a topic you don't like.

Personally, I can't stand lazy employees, because I've had to make up for their lack if work for ages.....maybe I should suggest that people defending them, by attacking employers looking to fix the problem, are on the side of lazy employees....bet that would go over well.
I agree 100% about lazy employees and not defending them.IMHO the lazy ones and not trust worthy should be FIRED on the spot.Just get a little perturbed about GPS tracking. If you don,t trust them fire them and move on.

My daughter worked at a hospital and they were tracked (badges have RFID). If the supervisor wants to, they can tell where each employee is at all times (or at least their badge location). It gets interesting when employees are abusing the lunch and break times, especially now with fewer resources to get the same or more work done. My daughter looked at it as positive and did not worry much about it, but she is one that does not abuse the rules. Others hated it and would leave their badges at various locations to upset the supervisors. The hospital had to stop tracking after the union got involved with some issues. I am guessing the next union contract will include tracking so the union cannot interfere.

The hospital I work at disable the tracking feature in our badges also. Too many supervisors abusing the feature and micromanaging the employees, . Ours would show up sometimes as you walked out of the bathroom............

Union also got involved citing privicy issues and the hospital caved and shut it down.

If the employees care about their job, do an honest day's work, and having nothing to hide - then they won't care about having a tracking device in the vehicle. I work with two of the national laboratories and ALL of the government vehicles have tracking devices in them. That includes the motor pool vehicles that are used by the employees for travel to work sites. Everyone who uses the vehicles is aware of the tracking and couldn't care less about using a vehicle with a tracking device. Wouldn't bother me either.

I got the tracking units in late this afternoon. I installed one in one of the trucks, but it's sitting in the shop until Monday. It was VERY simple to install. Just plug it into the OBD II port and give it a few minutes to lock on to the satellites. And it can easily be moved to other vehicles.

I had to call the company to be able to log on to the web site to set it up. I was supposed to get an email with instructions on how to do this, but never got the email. Another issue is that when I logged on, there is another unit on my account. And it's located in rural Illinois. I'm in South Louisiana. Not sure how that will be resolved yet.

I installed the other in my wife's truck and took it for a test drive. We went out for some shrimp. It worked pretty good. I downloaded the app to track on my iPhone. Sometimes it was a little slow to give me an updated position. By 'slow' I mean about 5 minutes, so not too bad.

Otherwise it worked pretty well. We were at the restaurant for 72 minutes.

I'm a little disappointed with the 'geo fence' function. The smallest radius I can set up is 1 mile. I know that some of the other tracking services allow you to set up much smaller geo fences.

I set up a geo fence around my shop, and now when a unit leaves or returns to within a mile of my shop, I get a text message telling me.

Overall, I think this system will serve my needs. It's not the best system available, but it's also not the most expensive.

You don't magically get what you pay for. Give lazy people more money, and they get lazier. You get what you can out of people. If they think they are worth more, and another employer agrees with them, they are free to leave. I am in favor of paying what people are worth, but a good laborer is still Just a laborer and not magically worth $12+ per hour. Wages don't increase work ethic, although they certainly can decrease it if below prevailing for there job. I don't like what I am currently making, so guess what, I look for a new job.

Before you feel sorry for his guys remember, the worst that can happen to his guys is they get fired, and paid for the hours they worked that day, no matter what wrong they do. These same employees could very well cost the OP a lot of money. If they wreck the truck, guess who gets sued, not the driver, but the owner...

It's a myth that you get what you pay for in employees. Those who will do a good job will do it regardless of the pay. But, they usually wont stay for long.

Same with honesty. You can't pay a thief enough to make him honest.

Got to see the GPS tracking system in action today. I really like the info I'm getting.

I was able to tell exactly how long my crews were at each stop. For the mowing crew, there were a few surprises. Some stops took longer than I expected, others took less. This should allow me to build up some data and give me some good tools to do a better job at estimating in the future.

I could also see how much driving time each crew had. This is time I'm paying them for, but I can't bill for.

And, the mowing crew spent 17 minutes at the gas station. That's not too bad. The landscape crew spent 36 minutes at the wholesale grower. That's probably a little longer than I'd like to see.

One crew spent 27 minutes at the McDonalds for lunch, and the other spent 40 minutes at the Pizza place for lunch. I take 30 minutes out of each day for their lunch break.

Oh, and I did get one text alert when one truck was speeding 67 in a 60 mph zone. He was just coming out of a 70 mph zone and had not slowed down yet. So, no big deal there.

Overall, I'm please with the way the system works so far.

If you don't mind telling us, are they aware of the GPS?
