I bought my '03 impala with 37k and put whatever the dealer changed the oil with. At 100k I started using valvoline synpower and now have 205k. Started leaking oil from valve cover gaskets around 150k and at the same time changed lower intake gasket because it was leaking coolant. That's the only time I've touched the engine. I don't see any indication it won't go to 250-300k...

I plan to drive it into the ground then open the engine to inspect. Probably won't be for another couple years, but I'm sure I'll have a full write-up here.

Agreed..............

I have used AMSOIL synthetic oil since 1975 and I have heard just about every BS horror story on synthetic oils. Not a !@#$%^&* one of them is true, just myths spread by those who have an axe to grind.

I'm gonna call you on that one.

I emailed amsoil and asked them if it was ok to put their product in a 30-50's era antique tractor.

the response I got was that due to possible seal and gasket incompatibilities, they did NOT reccomend use of their product in an engine that had not been rebuilt with new-er gasket and seal materials of more recent vintage than I was working with.

So.. some of those 'myths' that you are claiming 100% false.. may just have a shred of truth to them. I realize the amsoil official reply is probably more of a CYA statement.. .. however.. CYA statemetns are due to liability.. and liability many times has limited basis in actual problems.

Try 188k on an '06 Sierra 4.8L...

Still going strong at 225k running Mobil 1 5W30 syn

Seal technology has come a long way since then.

Detergent oils were mostly non-existant before WWII so massive sludge deposits were the only thing standing between merely small leaks and horrendous oil leaks. After a thorough purge by the new high detergent synthetic oil, increased oil leaks are a very high possible outcome.

How many times have there been posts in this forum from people looking for non-detergent oil for their old tractor? Any detergent oil used will most likely clean the engine and remove the crude and lead to the seals leaking BECAUSE the seals were INFERIOR back then.

I first used AMSOIL in a NEW 1975 Chevrolet K5 Blazer and it never leaked oil in the 5 yrs or so I had it.

kenmac, can you provide a UOA to confirm that Amsoil is better than Delvac S?

I can't provide that info for you. I have never run/used Delvac S. I'm sure if you were to visit some of sites that discuss oil ( a lot deeper than they do here),you'll find someone that has that info

i use detergent oil in ALL of my antiques. I have never experienced a massive filter clogging rush of junk falling loose. or spontaneus oil leaks.

I usually even run tranny fluid ( old f or m/d-3 ) in oils to HELP celan the engine up a bit.

the worst one i've ever done was a jd-B that actually got 5 oil changes and fitler changes in 1 week due to a massively dirty and emuslified engine.

past that it was fine.

Rotella is ok but there are better oils for the same money. Delvac, Dello 400, ect. Any in 15W40.

Rotella is the McDonald's of oil.

Thats funny.LOL.Show your proof?I have used rotella,delo,Valvoline prem.blue and delvac with the same results in my diesel trucks,mowers and tractors.
