About a year ago after my Pavilion dv4 computer developed a still not located why problem of slowing to a creep and will time out before getting the opening screen up . I purchased this recommended type Hp 2000 with Win 8 . And still have not trusted the computer to put in my record keep information of farm expenses or tax information. And returned to the 3 ring binder to make sure which is placed in file will be there when again needing to get the numbers.
The pictures of shop and farm equipment along with family is now mixed into a collage of cows and tractors and family get to gathers. then placed onto a cloud somewhere should be able top retrieve except the password is now mixed into a notice that unable to access due to Win 8.1 needs verification that I am who I am.
Only one ever to use this machine and now have to prove my identification.

Have 5 Grand children and when out of high school purchased a new computer for each before college All 5 said the instructor's said get the apple computer because it is what he uses.
They have no interest of how it works and what to do if fails just down load gad zillion tunes of music to then listen to some type of additional gadget all from Apple. And all sit around looking at the phone screen instead of speaking to some one sitting next to each other.
There able to use the computer in college but only to get there test turned in time for the grade. Then when asked for other information . It is a blank look

Give some one a hammer or other tool and they can make a living .Give a computer they all want to buy and sell on line.

Have on g-son that failed to pay attention to the engine light on his Honda. Kept driving until engine seized. Suggested to rebuild the engine did not know it was possible. And sold at a large loss .
What is the future of this country if this type of knowledge continues to be developed.

I have always used a mouse since they tamed them... and I bought a mouse for my Mac. Now I wish I didn't spend the money as it sits unused. Yes it took a bit to get used to the touch pad but now I never use the mouse. I am an older guy so yes you can get used to it. One thing about the Mac and I don't know if it is the same on Windows based laptops is that you don't have to 'click' on the pad. Just tap or slide or... I am finding now that I am faster with the touchpad/keyboard combo than using a mouse. Beauty is that it is one less piece of equipment to haul around, not to mention the extra batteries I no longer have to carry (road warrior talk). Again, not trying to sing Apple Tunes here... just saying that the touch pad is great and you can let the mouse go. Wondering out loud if this is the same experience with windows laptop users?

The touchpads on Windows work very easily too, it is just when you get as ancient as Bird and I your finger tips tend not to be as sensitive as when you are young. Same with the other senses. Enjoy em while you got em:)
Ever notice when you use a touch screen to sign in somewhere or to vote how messed up they are. That's from us old folks pushing too hard..

When I was using my laptop in the field for genealogy research I had a laptop bag that held it, a flatbed scanner that was almost identical to the dimensions of the 17" Dell Studio and was USB powered, and room for cords, snacks, paper tablets, etc. A nice kit whether going to the library genealogy room, someone's home to scan old relative pictures, or even a cemetery to record grave information.

At home I use it on a little desket that has a bean bag deal on the bottom to fit on your knees comfortably. It has plenty of room for the mouse to the side of the 17" Dell.

I wonder how many folks buy laptops today as their only computer?

I still prefer the desktop since everything is modular and you don't have to toss the thing or pay big bucks if the monitor, keyboard, sound system, or something else craps out since they can be easily replaced at low cost individually.
Plus for editing Canon RAW photo format or any images for that matter, a big monitor that stays at the same tilt position is essential.

When you set up your 8.1 computer there was a step where you either had to text, use another email sign in, or have Windows call you on a cell or land line phone. You were given a "Trust Code"
That is probably what the verification is about.
Remember your cloud storage can be accessed from any computer by anyone that has the identity clearance. So all the extra crap is to protect your documents that you may have put in your cloud storage. It is like a PIN number for your credit card or bank account.
From your prime W.8 computer it should not normally ask for the Trust Code but might on occasion especially if you have set your computer so you don't have to sign in every time after the Lock Screen.

At least that is my interpretation of the "Trust Code"

Since the W 8 now 8.1 pc I bought my wife is a desktop unit we have no need for the cloud storage stuff. Plenty of hard drive space and plenty of portable hard drives sitting around for back up without wasting time and allotment from Hughes.net sending stuff back and forth.

Speaking of the computer mouse.

I use Office, CorelDRAW, AutoCAD, PhotoPaint, various movie-making programs, I could go on and on but what all these programs have in common are the menu's available in the mouse right click. As Ron mentioned, those menu's change according to the tool you are using at the moment. That means you don't have to move the mouse/trackpad pointer to another position somewhere on the screen to access a pull-down menu, which improves efficiency. In fact, on my trackball, there are four programmable buttons and one ring for scrolling. Trackpads are OK for some, but not if you do serious computer business. I know, somebody out there is gonna chime in with how they use their trackpad to design spaceships.

Yes the microsoft 4000 mouse is very programmable as well and is always on sale someplace for $14-20. Only takes 1 AA battery that is supposed to last 10 months without even turning it off. Works well from any surface, even the part of the laptop below the keys that is wasted around the touch pad.
Lots of mice out there that work fine in all price ranges. This one just fits my hand well.
I always say that most of today's cars look like a computer mouse with just slight variations in shape.

That is about exactly what I thought of when I first saw the W8 systems. lol

I have a Logitech Track ball on my other desk top machine and LOVED it, used it to draw in AutoCAD. I got REALLY fast at it and when I went to work doing AutoCAD for job I wanted one. IT said not aloud to bring in outside computer peripherals? Ended up having to use a Mouse which killed my arm and slowed me down... My marble device had 8 programmable buttons & the left/right mouse standards. I ended up knocking the device onto the floor and messed something up in it. :( Had wireless mouse so went back to that.
