Here is the little lady enjoying the warmth of the woodstove. The wife won't let her on the carpet with all her shedding going on.

We give ours buzz cuts and they are then welcome many places they would otherwise be shut out of. No shedding issues. I leave the hair on their ears a little long but they get short cuts and really love it. On the plus side they do need more hugs to keep warm so we everybody wins.

Today she was like a new dog - full of energy and playing non-stop like a pup her age should. A glimmer of hope . We'll keep doing whatever it takes - she's our baby. Just hope it's sooner than later.

That is one expensive dog. Sounds like you may have found a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope the problem is solved and soon Chewy will get to be a regular dog.

Thanks for the well wishes Robert. She's still eating really well and her GI tract seems to be working as it should, and immune system is up. Found a few worms and took them with us to her appt yesterday - tapeworms. Vet gave her a shot this time - still pooping but hard and full of dead worms -guess the shot is working. She always finds and eats a couple rabbit or deer berries before I can stop her and clean them up, and always munching grass, sticks and dirt. I think that's how she keeps picking the tapeworms up. Her mange still looks about the same - no worse anyway - vet wants to wait till she finishes her antibiotics (5 more days) before considering treatment. We've just been bathing her twice a week with the Dema Benss shampoo. Have sulfer based Nu-System ointment too but afraid to use it since her prob spots are all around her mouth and eyes - the 2 places directions say not to get in. She was just 6 months Mon, I hope she grows up soon and quits the puppy stuff. Yea, very expensive dog for getting her 'free'.

Tapeworms come from fleas. The dog bites the itch and swallows the flea, and gets tapeworms. No fleas, no reinfection. If she has fleas, or gets them again, there is a good chance she will end up with tapeworms again.

If she is munching on grass, dirt, etc., see if the vet will approve a raw beef bone for her to gnaw on, or maybe even some deer antlers. I have seen deer antlers in some of the pet goods stores. She may be needing something in her diet, and that may also be why her immune system is weakened. With it being deer season, maybe a neighbor can bring in an antler or a deer bone for her.

Thanks farmgirl. No fleas - not even hitch-hikers that we can tell, but lots of critters in the yard besides what the birds drop. Tapeworms are from eggs and adults in deer & rabbit berries (seen 'em), also in the dirt around area where I clean them up. Good idea about the bone/antler, will have to try that - makes sense as vet gave us a calcium supp for her.

She might have had fleas when you got her, or even before. She could have swallowed one, (or more), and then with the incubation period (or whatever it is called), they may have just begun coming out in numbers. I understand about seeing worms and segments in other animal droppings, but my vet said those have to go through a flea. Maybe there are different types of tapeworms, in different areas of the country. I'm just glad she is getting rid of them!

Glad your vet has her on supplements, and is trying to help her immune system via diet. Good luck, and keep us posted.

We aren't bothered by fleas, thank goodness because the ticks and mosquitoes are enough to worry about for disease sources.

Farmgirl, I called my vet about your vet saying tapeworms can only be contracted by dogs through ingestion of infected fleas or lice. He assures me there are several different types of tapeworms, only one of which can pass to a dog through ingestion of an infected flea or louse. There are other types that pass from ingestion of infected feces, or the infected animal itself, dead or alive, ie; rabbits, mice, rats, deer, birds etc. There are other types still that if their eggs or body, at any stage of their life, happens to be on the ground, or a leaf, or stick and ingested can also infect a dog or most any creature. Even humans, who inadvertantly ingest any type of tapeworm can also become infected. :shocked: Google it to see for yourself.

**Just thought this important for all to know as there are indeed many more ways than one for almost any living thing to become infected.**
