Cheaper oil filters

   / Cheaper oil filters #31
I thought I read posts here in the past that said the nobody else made filters that would fit Kubota tractors. After reading this thread I went on NAPA's site and found that they list Kubota tractors including mine, the B3200. They have NAPA Gold filters for the engine, transmission, hydraulic, fuel and air.
I'm not going to bash Kubota brand filters, I'm sure whoever builds them does so the Kubota's specs.

I did a lot of research for oil filters for my Yamaha Rhino as I didn't want any engine problems (at least from oil) when I'm out in the middle of nowhere. I look at it from a reliability/best protection for my engine viewpoint, not price. If I have to spend a couple bucks more to buy a filter that filters finer particles than the OEM, I'll spend the money. I've had good luck with NAPA Gold filters (I understand that Wix makes them) and I like the idea of running down to my local NAPA dealer rather than shlepping to the closest Kubota dealer, who I've not been very impressed with.

Anyone else with a B3200? Check this out: NAPA AUTO PARTS

you do realize not all fram are built the same. there are distinct differences in material and construction between levels.

Yeah they have bad, worse, and awful:rotfl:

Actually, the Fram top line filter ranked among the best in a recent test. A real test, not Consumer Reports.

I just serviced my Kubota L3830 GST and used all Wix (Napa Gold) filters. They had part numbers for engine, hydraulic and fuel. Not sure if they list filters for newer models as mines is almost ten years old now.

What are you considering their top of the line filter?

I saw that test and while I have not used Fram in a while would have no problem with their high end filter. I would just have to purge my mind of the old days of the cheap Fram filter rumors.

Here's something I learned from a Subaru tech when I took my Forester in for some little recalls things: Subaru, and I would presume others, are switching over to larger oil capacity systems (2 gallons?) and twin filters, with changes called for every two years or 20,000 miles. They figure that this uses less resources overall, and saves money.

A friend of mine that is a serious commercial diesel guy tells me the same thing. Maybe that explains why I seem to see an increasing number of aftermarket dual oil filter setups in the car and truck mags.

Everyone has opinions. What many people may not realize is that there are only a couple companies that make oil filters as well as oil. I worked as an automotive machinist (engine builder) for many years and the engine shop also had a parts store. 5 different oil companies would come in the Valvoline truck when they restocked the auto parts store.

Wix and I believe Fram make filters for most of the filter companies out there. If someone wants to buy a John Deere or Kubota filter go right ahead. They work, but at almost double the cost of a Fram, Wix, or NAPA filter. NAPA filters are made by WIX. WIX has had the reputation as being the best. I have used Fram and AC filters for 25 years and have had no issues. I mostly now use NAPA Gold filters due to they are made by WIX and NAPA stores are everywhere you look and they can get parts for most anything with in a day or two.

Something else many people don't realize is the oil filter does not filter 100% of the oil during its recycling through the oil pump and engine per cycle. There's an oil by-pass valve in the engine block that allows much of the oil during the cycle to by-pass the filter. This prevents the oil filter from blowing up under pressure, in particular in cold weather and while the engine has not yet reached operating temperature. I don't remember the exact number, but only about 30 - 40% of the oil per circulation period goes through the filter. When you look at it this way a cheap or good filter may not matter as much unless you remove the by-pass valve.

I use Wix/Napa or Baldwin in my truck and Cat heavy equipment.

This is just it. They realized they were losing market share and decided to step up quality.
