790 and 3005 Hydraulic Shimming

I did mine for more 3pt lift power. Works great now for lifting my disc plow with added wt. to cut better. I would do it again for sure!

Maybe, but what if it was rated to that level to keep it from breaking its back ?

This ain't a heavy duty machine.

Would it be a more accurate comment to say "heavy duty for its size". Looks to be built very well to me. What could make it more heavy duty.

I'd put it like "the hydraulic capacity is well suited to it's size and weight".

Well said, I would imagine that's why John deere has engineers. I used to mod my cars my motorcycles my boats, even my lawn mower but over the years I have realized its better to leave well enough alone. Wonder if this mod would void the warranty.

Personally, I would not mod (for more power or hydraulic pressure) any tractor that had a warranty. I can't say adding one pack of shims would void your warranty...but if the dealer got sh**ty, it might.

I can't recall any TBN threads on 790 hydraulic failures though (but I'm sure the pumps and control valve do wear out or break occasionally).

I shimmed my 790 when it was new (to me) and I had it in my shop over the winter...before taking it "up north" to my property. I was concerned about the 3 point not having the lift power needed to carry my disc and had zero experience with how the loader would work, etc.

I read here on TBN how many folks had shimmed to increase the hydraulic pressure to about 2500 psi.....and it seems like a way to improve the tractor. Mine was originally at the spec of 2050 and one pack of shims brought it up to 2300 lbs IIRC. I used a gauge.

After using it a bit.....I could see little or no advantage to adding more hydrualic capacity as the tractor exceeded my expectations. (I worried a little about tweaking the loader when I'd pick up big trees) I left well enough alone with the one pack of shims.

And then they ***** like a little girl when they break. Just saying.

Sure some do, but I can't find a single post on any tractor forum where somebody complained that by adding one shim pack max to increase their hydraulic pressure up to 2500psi max (checked it with a gauge) that it broke anything on their JD770, 790, 3005 tractor. And people have been running this mod on these tractors for 8+ years. Just saying...

I just added 1 shim pac to my 3005. Original pressure was 2150psi. After adding the shim pac it was 2500psi. As noted the results were modest but noticeable. I am going to add a few more shims to shoot for 2900 psi. I am trying to lift small scrub trees out of the ground and feel I need just a bit more power.

The caution for me seems to be that the entire design and balance of the tractor does not seem to be happy swinging and lifting big loads in the front. With 2500 psi and a stubborn tree root I feel I am at near the limit of the overall tractor design. I used a 3000 psi gauge on an 18" long piece of prefabricated hydraulic hose and a male quick connect coupling to read the pressures at the connection point of the front bucket. Note that there are several styles of quick connect couplings that look very similar but only the exact one will mate up.
