Don't be so sure on the Quincy long life span. I bought one 14 years ago for the home shop and it has been a turd for just having a couple hundred hours of operation. 3 set of blown head gaskets and last year a reed valve broke off on the high pressure side and dropped into the cylinder and wedged itself between the piston and cylinder wall for while running. Quincy does not just sell the reed valves separate from the valve plate but at least it was only $160 for the assembly but then I had to buy head gaskets again at $31 each. But at least it pumps up slower now with groove cut into the cylinder wall.
As for the IR compressors I purchased one at work (10hp T-30). The compressor pump is made in India and the motor is a WEG made in Taiwan. The pump casting is porous cast iron and oil was weeping out of it shortly after start up. The fix from IR was to wash the weeping areas down with brakekleen and apply a wicking grade of Loctite to seal it up. It worked but really. Since then it has gone 2500hrs without a problem.
In my maintenance shop at work I purchased a 5hp/2stage Speedaire from Grainger 11 years ago and it has been flawless. I would buy again in a heartbeat.

If I may ask, which Quincy model di you have the problems with? Thanks.

As discussed earlier, I made some measurements while at Northern last Friday.
Ingersol Rand model CBV264840 had a mexico-made motor running @ 3450, a china-made pump, 4"/15" pulleys for a pump speed of 920 calculated.
The Quincy 2V41C60 (V4 pump) had a USA-made Baldor motor spun @ 3450, apparently USA-pump, 5.5"/12" pulleys for a pump speed of 1580 calculated.
Quincy 251CP80VCP (in-line pump) had a USA-made Baldor motor spun @ 1725, USA-made in-line pump, 7.5"/14" pulleys for a pump speed of 925 calculated. The only thing I could see that was not USA-sourced on this product was the pressure gauge (china), but possibly the ball valves were also imported ( I could not see them well enough to tell).
The Quincy 251CS80VCB has same specs as 251CP80VCP except USA CutlerHammer magnetic starter included, mounted and wired.
Also found a Puma low speed unit, TN5080VM, 80 gallons, 5 hp 1725 rpm motor, V-twin two stage pump. Looked like a good unit for the price (~$1400), but motor from portugal and pump from Taiwan, and several hundred dollars shipping, so I guess it does not really measure up. I didnt get to see it so could not measure the pulleys.
I guess I like the idea of a slow speed (1725 rpm) motor now, and larger displacement slower turning pump for noise and longevity reasons. That's the direction I am going.

I think that is a wise choice. Good luck!

Sounds good..

It would appear, that at least in this case, the 60gallon ones are more 'residential' use with higher speeds.. good to know.

I totally concur on the lower rpm. I hate my el cheapo buzz bomb but it hasn't died yet....

How about Champion compressor? Made in USA, 805 RPM pump.
